KP: priced at flagship apsc but it's not flagship apsc?

points that support it is a flagship:
1. price
2. dedicated hand grip

points that support it is not a flagship:
1. on board flash
2. no top led
3. not using K5/K3/K1/645z battery
Unit volume down 50% = prices up 50%

As an aside, I wish Ricoh would decide on where it wants the Liveview button/switch to live...

EDIT: As I think about it, I think the KP's switch solution is nice, because it will be possible to turn on the camera and have it go directly into liveview (if the switch was left in LV position). On the K-3, going from OFF to Liveview shooting always requires two actions: turn-on, then hit the LV button...

Hopefully away from the 4-way controller buttons (like the K-3). Iv'e hit it too many times by accident on the K-7/K-5 layout.

Also the green button keeps moving, and the exposure mode dial can't decide whether it wants to be on the right or the left.

I just wonder if they are going to kill the evolution of the K7-K5ii-K3 APS-C bodies in favor of this new one?
Maybe they just want to leave alone the K1 at the top end?
For me the K5ii body ergonomics was close to perfect...
They did with the KP what I had expected them to do with the K-70 - from the front, ignoring the grip the camera has a definite family resemblance to the K-1, and completely different from modern Canikon entries. Someone should be able to tell its Pentax even if they can't read the name.
Compare camera dimensions side by side

What he said ^^
I'm guessing that Pentax/Ricoh Imaging is reevaluating what a Pentax APS-C flagship means.
A single card slot and 8 RAW frame buffer. Mid-range, not flagship...

So unless Ricoh wants to be an extremely niche company there will be a 4th K-mount body in the lineup...

What I'm saying is that, perhaps, their APS-C flagship is no longer a $1100-$1200 MSRP camera - and the compromises it brings. This is indeed a mid-range camera, maybe for the APS-C flagship they're targeting higher?
Not like I know.

Remember, the K200d had a dedicated grip too, so I wouldn't say that suggests flagship.

IMO it's really just the price!

$1500 would be between the KP and the K-1...and 6 months from now the KP will be below $1000.

And not up to D500's level, which is difficult to compete with. Yes, that might be the sweet spot.

Does Pentax actually have the capability to produce a D500 level camera?

I suspect not, personally.
