Improved DR, Better AF tracking, deeper buffer.. for starters.
This is an unusually spec'd camera. It has some high end features such as the allegedly improved sensor and improved (over K-3II) tracking.. yet has a slower burst rate, smaller buffer, one card slot, USB2 vs USB3, smaller battery and is priced higher than the K-3II.
If Ricoh offer a K-3 III replacement with the filled in specs in the next couple of months, then the price will be the consideration... because it won't be cheaper than this KP. Yet, unless it really knocks the performance out of the park, it starts to butt into more established, competing systems.
Even if the K-3 III is a monumental upgrade (over the K-3 II) and is offered still around 1200-1300 USD, if it is offered closer to the end of the year, then they run into a similar issue of butting into more established, higher end systems...
Right now, we only see part of the plan. So it doesn't make sense. The hope I have is at CP+, we'll get more of an idea. This is the time for Ricoh to step up to the microphone and give current Pentaxians a feel for what they have in mind for the future of Pentax and not leave us to guess. Because the guessing will almost always end up a bit negative.. and negativity is not going to help build your brand!
