Another topic with a title that will be inaccurate as time flies. It should have been:Pentax K-3 II successor in September 2017. As for K-1 stealing sales? This is good. The more K-1's are sold the harder Ricoh will work on the ecosystem. Hopefully they will come up with a new prime concept for D FA and later also DA which have fast silent and compact AF motors and are weather sealed. Pentax really has to aim this new aps-c flagship at birders, wildlife and sports people. Fast and furiously competitive with the 7d Mk II and D500.

The eventual K3II replacement will be a very interesting play for Pentax. I'm not sure what would be the right move....especially with the price increasing substantially as all indicators point to. We all look for better autofocus... but there are not that many hi end APSC lenses that have the motors to take advantage of it. Those of us with a K-1 and some modern lenses will want auto focus tracking significantly better then our K-1's to have it as a second camera for sports/wildlife.... otherwise we might as well just use our cheap K3...

The problem with this is that as the Pentax prices head north their value proposition goes out the window..... and there's no 3rd party options.... in lenses etc. The DFA's in the Australian market are so expensive....I can't see many people coming in at that level going Pentax.... most of us were already on the train.

Around two weeks ago I tried to buy K-3 II. The shop didn't have it, so they contacted Pentax. Pentax told them that they don't manufacture K-3 II anymore.

So that probably means that same production line K-3 II had, was given to KP or was under modification to produce KP.

Of course Pentax may given wrong information to shop, but this is what they told then and also told that there will probably be new launch 26.1, which there was.

From that perspective KP is new K-3 II and replaced it.

I went to K-1. If that was their strategy, it worked! Don't regret a bit.

It won't be as expensive as the D500, more like the 7D Mk II, whose next iteration will probably be aiming at the D500 price level as well. Problem is Ricoh does not have a pro range D5 1Dx to borrow AF tech from.

In our market I'm expecting a 30 - 35% increase.... ie $1,500 to $2,000..... but it's the lens price that has become the killer... DFA 150-450 is a $3,000 lens here..... just silly expensive with no lower price options....

I hope they could make FF wide 55-300 PLM (or 70-300). Normal 55-300 PLM works with K-1 but one need to crop or use crop mode. Little bit wider lens would do it. It would be good price compact size tele zoom for K-1.

In the us it's 2500 dollars (before tax) and in Europe 2200 Euro's. It's actually cheapest in Australia. I guess Ricoh has matched it's price to their production capacity. It has been sold for much less than that though and it will probably drop in price again at some point. The D FA 70-200 is much more competitively priced, so I guess it's not selling as well.

I haven''t used one, But I've seen some Bigmas around here in the birding crowd. They are much cheaper. No WR and a bit slower, of course.

The K-1 in the USA is only around 1800 USD right now. As they age, they should lower in price.

But the concern is they release a K-3 III successor at the 1400-1500 USD price and thus rather close to a K-1 price. Only 300 dollars away new and right on top of used prices.

For many people this is the K-3 II successor:

Aps-c was a stop holder until Pentax finally came with a Full Frame camera.

That's true for me. I sold my K-3 and was only mildly interested in the KP.

I went that path, and as a K-5 owner it was a step up even for crop shot (buffer is double the K-5 one).

But many Pentaxian I know are not interested in full frame, and just want a K-3 with faster AF for BIF/motorsport.

I just checked Canon prices here, the EF 100-400 F4.5-5.6L IS II USM is on sale for $2730 instead of $2970, the EF70-200 F2.8L IS II USM is on sale for $2400 instead of $2830. Photographic equipment sales are steadily dropping off, good thing there are still "enthusiasts" with enough disposable income to buy this type of lens and an equally expensive body every few years; if the brick and mortar camera shops here had to survive on selling cameras to soccer moms, they would all go out of business. I'm more worried about Ricoh not investing in anything less than premium products going forward. I'll get a divorce or a Harley before I spend $10,000 on a FF camera system, but there may not be much out there five years from now to satisfy my lust for new camera lenses.

People who want a "successor" to the K3/K3II will want not only an improved AF system but also what the KP has: improved (a lot) high ISO capabilities, together in one camera.
Those are features from the KP and the K1; a bit of both in one package would be nice.
I can't justify (read: afford) having to buy a K1 because of the lens costs and my personal opinion is that there will be an APS-C to replace the K3/K3II ... hopefully.
Seven months seems a fair wait.

K-1 is in so few ways a sport or wildlife shooting tool...
