Seven months before the successor of the K3II?

As long as Pentax is working on it, there is hope. They have everything lined up already. All they need to do is improve upon the AF tracking abilities & give better focus confirmation through the viewfinder. I'm not expecting a D500 or 7D Mark II camera, but hopefully it will outperform the D7200/D7500 in AF or be very close to their AF performance. If they need until September of next year to pack the upcoming APS-C flagship with more excellence & win than the Nikon D7200/D7500 & the Canon 80D, I'm willing to wait until then. Who knows. They might even "left field" us with a new "high performance" KAF4 lens or 2 to go with it. I do highly doubt that will happen. though.

I should probably be flogged, tarred, & feathered for even thinking of such AF performance nonsense.

Based on Past practice, looking at past announcements and launches, I smell a July-ish "leakset" and announcement, a September show release and sales right after, before year end... I know that's weak, but it wouldn't hoit

Frankly, I think they need to at least be showing a working prototype by the end of this year (IMHO) because:

1) - they need the momentum - people are very twitchy, and ready to change systems. A couple of years might not be long in the life of a company, but it is in the life of a photographer.
2) - The idea that the K-3ii replacement would be six months after the KP was from a reasonable source and has not been contradicted by Pentax - too long a delay would look like they were having problems with either technology or commitment, and either would be bad for getting people to buy into Pentax - who have one of the best line-ups of APSC lenses and should take advantage of that.
3) - If you take too long developing cameras - The K-1 is a case in point, some of the tech you are locked into (USB2, etc in the case of the K-1) is beginning to be outdated before the camera is released

Maybe. But, I still don't expect it this year.
- people waited a loong time for the FF. Some will leave; many will stay.
- Pentax does not contradict product rumors. There are no reliable leaks about a new APS-C flagship - there would be, if it was 2 months from release.
- we know nothing about the next APS-C flagship, it makes no sense to assume obsolete specifications. A camera takes some time in R&D anyway - I remember Samsung once said the development of their NX1 took about 3 years. And it wasn't outdated when released.

This will be a quiet year. I have good hopes for 2018, however... I'm reasonably convinced they're not sitting idle. I think it will be worth the wait.

Nikon brought a new D7500. When Canon is smart they will bring out a 7D MkIII soon. The 80D is already pretty competitive. In a higher performance body it will be able to compete with the D500. Pentax will put the K-3 series successor (I don't believe in aK-3 III) between the D7500 on the one side and the 7D MkII (or three when it arrives) and the D500. At a price point more like the D7500. The KP will occupy the K-3 II price point. A new processor capable of 4k, the noise reduction tech in the K-70 KP. On sensor PDAF that works, an articulating or K-1 like touch screen. (and corresponding menu system). New PDAF chip that improves significantly on af performance. Even faster operation than the K-3 II (10fps and maybe super fast electronic shutter operation). 5 stops IBIS. And Pentax will have a killer. If it has all this maybe 2018 will be worth the wait. But Maybe The recent price hikes of the K-1 in Europe and Australia have been attempts to make room for a higher priced aps-c body. So it could end op not costing €1500 but more like €1700
