Frankly, I think they need to at least be showing a working prototype by the end of this year (IMHO) because:
1) - they need the momentum - people are very twitchy, and ready to change systems. A couple of years might not be long in the life of a company, but it is in the life of a photographer.
2) - The idea that the K-3ii replacement would be six months after the KP was from a reasonable source and has not been contradicted by Pentax - too long a delay would look like they were having problems with either technology or commitment, and either would be bad for getting people to buy into Pentax - who have one of the best line-ups of APSC lenses and should take advantage of that.
3) - If you take too long developing cameras - The K-1 is a case in point, some of the tech you are locked into (USB2, etc in the case of the K-1) is beginning to be outdated before the camera is released
