Finally

MTF is not everything, microcontrast, bokeh and rendering are equally or more important. Anyway finally after 20 years of agony we might have some proper 50mm lens...

FA50/1.4 is usable only in F2+ range

DA*55/1.4 was introduced as replacement for "85/1.8" lens for APS-C cameras and although it works on FF, it is not what everybody expect

Nor is the important question, should I buy this or the DA* 55 1.4 which is already available?

Odd to say the least, with a 55 already out there, an 85 or 135 are conspicuous in their absence. Especially the 135 with not a single new lens available between 100 and 200mm and the 100 and 200s being older designs.

They never discuss these things with me.

I would have said they need a 150mm macro.

Probably this will be a great lens, but I don't need it right now. I mostly shoot landscapes and I have the 24-70 and the FA 43. Kenspo, is there any chance that you can tell us when that wide-angle prime will be coming?

Even though i rate the 15-30 over 24-70, that is still an amazing lense Wish i could..I know what is coming, but haven't spoken with them lately about when. But as i said earlier..2017 is the year of the primes.

And it will be faster and sharper. Perfect for us pros that doesn't have the time to fiddle with the old and slow lenses Cant wait to get this in my bag!
Good on you, Ken, and good on Pentax for giving us these choices.

The *55 is WR, is f1.4, has an in-lens motor (not quick, to be sure) and was designed by Jun Hirakawa, so has glorious rendering.

Similarly, I own both the screwdrive FA31 and the big, highly corrected Sigma 35mm Art.

Guess which is in my bag most often?

That's a big boy! If it is going to be that big why not just go the whole hog and make a 1.2 to compete with Canon.
Iʻve owned a f/1.2 58mm in the past, and the additional cost and size and razor thin depth-of-field wide open is impractical for most of us. f/1.4 is the ideal fast standard between the costly f/1.2 and the value oriented f/1.8.

Also I believe that Pentax is not trying to compete with Canon. They are competing against themselves to keep the system relevant for Pentaxians and those new to photography and my hunch is that the current 55mm f/1.4 DA* is going out of production and this is replacing it.

Sure. I have the K55 f1.8 too, but appreciate the 'A' on an aperture ring.

Yep! Plus as another mentioned.. it would just be done by now.

They did this same thing (prototype.. coming soon[tm].. delayed launch taking their time to get it right) with the 70-200mm and look how that turned out? Gorgeous lens.

I'm just happy to know they're seriously working on something (D-FA) at this point..
Yea I agree. The 70-200 is Pentax best lens so far! (my personal opinion, of course).

I have both the 55 and and the limited ones..they are good lenses..31 is one of my all time favourites. But all these are slow in focusing for my kind of work, so only use them when i dont need the speed. So this 50 will be welcome..Not just by me, but also potensial new Pentax users
