We shall see. As someone else mentioned in the thread I may have gotten a bad copy of the 55.

Let's see exactly what's being offered when the specs come out. Remember the big question with DA lenses that only just make the full frame cut, in ideal examples, is that there's no wriggle room left when that moving sensor has to move to weave its SR magic. That's fine in a hundred dollar plastic-bodied 50mm APS-C prime; not appropriate in * lens land.

If the intent is to make the image circle so large it will not vignette at any combination of distance or aperture, with K-1 shake reduction working overtime at full displacement, MAYBE that's worth the price. Otherwise I have a perfectly good FA50/1.4 that I will be sticking with for my normal AF prime needs (which I freely admit are amateur in general and enthusiast at best).

I knew it, they had to deliver this one!
50/1.4 is the Alpha and Omega of any system and finally Pentax has its due Alpha and Omega.
Looks great, despite fact that the lens hood makes it a lot bigger.

Sigma copy in fact: huge, heavy. not pentax any more
Tell me what you think of Leica Summilux-SL 50 mm f/1.4 ASPH then, with its 80mm filter thread?

If this new DA*50 it has a decent motor, WR, and superb performance across the frame (and we expect nothing less), then it must be big.

A super monster! The King of the monsters!
It matches the monster mirror-less camera

I know the photo of the lens is NOT final. But judging from the photo, I feel it is as tall as Leica SL 50. Leica saved space on camera, and put it back on lens. Pentax registration distance is longer, plus the length of the lens? -- I might be wrong. i didn't play with photo and measure the size by matching the mount size. Just my feeling.

That was my thought too - the laws of physics still apply

Reviewers are giving the new Leica Summilux-SL 50mm high praise, despite it's phenomenal price tag. This new Pentax D FA* lens will be an interesting comparison - both specs and price.

Someone needs to put this next to an Industar 50/3.5 and ask if it's really worth the size, weight and price increase once you close down to f/4 or slower in non-AF-critical situations

Could this be a rebadged sigma 50mm 1.4?

Extremely nopeful.

But it is probably aimed at competing with the Sigma 50 1.4 Art. Which was aimed at competing with the (4000 USD) 55mm Otus.

The Sigma Art uses 77mm filters and costs 949 USD at B&H right now. I think this D-FA* will be in the ballpark of that Sigma. And plus (since it is a * lens) it will have weather sealing..

Size wise shouldn't be an issue since it is geared to mount to the K-1. Should balance nicely.

Why would they tease it at CP+ if they weren't actually still developing it? If it's a simple rebadge... they can't be developing it right?

Not rebadged stuff. This new 50/1.4 is the real deal.
When they say "still developing" it means they may have two or three iterations or variations.

Pentax is known for designing best 50 mm 1.4 lenses in the world, and now they are getting back to work.
Now I wish to fly to Yokohama and see it in person!

I do not see Pentax putting the * moniker on someone else's rebadged lens.

Yep! Plus as another mentioned.. it would just be done by now.

They did this same thing (prototype.. coming soon[tm].. delayed launch taking their time to get it right) with the 70-200mm and look how that turned out? Gorgeous lens.

I'm just happy to know they're seriously working on something (D-FA) at this point..

Interesting that unless the "Wide-Angle Single Focus Lens" is actually announced as a shipping product tomorrow, this lens seems to have overtaken it on the roadmap.

Anyway, it's good to see it taking shape, but I bet it will cost 50% more than the Sigma, at least.

Then we could all joint the "1.2 only" club. They'd hate that. They think they are special.

I think they are paying Pentax not to make a 1.2.
Please attention:
Model name: tentative
So 1.2 is possible
