Maybe they took an FA50/1.4 and added a vestigial outer housing for the purposes of impressing your non-pentax colleagues.

There should be room in the lens lineup for small/compact lenses as well as no holds barred optical behemoths. The former is already pretty flushed out, the latter isn't. So bring on the behemoths! I expect they're smart enough to know if there's a demand for this or not. With the release things like the svelte looking K-P and the 55-300 plm, I'm not prepared to sound the death knell on the small & compact philosophy. I'm happy to give them time to crank out some highly-correct modern massive designs and eventually get back to refreshing the smaller stuff that attracted many of their customers (including me).

Actually wait, what am I saying.

Is it Tamron?

It's jointly developed lens. The patent belongs to Pentax.

Actually, all the lenses common to the Tokina and Pentax portfolios were based on Pentax-patented optical formulas licensed to Tokina except the 12-24mm f/4, which is based on a Tokina-patented optical formula licensed to Pentax.

Then each vendor developed its own autofocus solution, autofocus clutch, casing and more and manufactured its version of the lens.

So the Pentax - Tokina partnership had nothing to do with rebadging somebody else's lenses.

Yes its huge, it will not come cheap and its made for the FUTURE!!!

If you dont like it, just go play and fiddle with your old glass. Let us others be happy about it. Just stop the whining!!!

Pentax need to think ahead too..not get stuck in the old days like many seems to be. Pentax wants to rise, not to only satisfy old timers.

Its made for FF and the future, so get over it when it comes to size. The times with the small fiddle glass for FF are over!!!! Quality ahead of size.

And btw..for all you negative people, i just get your head back in the sand..Let us that is positive and happy have our time

There..just had to get it out of my system!
I think the real problem is that Ricoh used to be a really well run company that did everything right while Pentax did everything wrong - but as soon as Ricoh bought Pentax, they instantly forgot how to run a business or make the cameras or lenses that customers want. It's a sad tale, and should be a salutary warning to all those thinking that they can turn around a doomed company.

The Pentax DA*16-50mm f/2.8 lens is a Tamron re-badge. There goes that theory.

As I remember Tokina had launched 16-50 first?
Lens was designed by Pentax, hence patent was granted to Pentax. By this logic D FA 24-70 is a jointly developed lens between Tamron and Pentax.

I just love how any announcement of new Pentax product, immediately gets received with whining chorus of people, that expected something tailored specifically for their taste. And of course, any lens release is accompanied by moaning about it being a Tamron/Sigma lens disguised by evil Ricoh as a Pentax.
