Full frame primes don't vignette as badly as full frame zoom lenses do? The Leica M-Noctilux 50mm f/0.95 ASPH vignettes to a spectacular degree:


So does the Canon 50mm f/1.2L:

The intriguing thing is they all have basically the same amount of vignetting at f/2.8.

If speaking about best of the best in lens designs, evidence from the ground and images tell current best lens designer in the world is Mr Peter Karbe, of Leica..

My question to you was not "Is Peter Karbe a lens designer for Leica"?

It was, 'what is the evidence for your claim that "Hirakawa's designs and glass formulas are both made for film; for digital, no."'?

BTW, did you see Digitalis' data above?

You need to email Peter Karbe and tell him to do something about his 3eV vignetting.

Wow this thread is moving quickly. I can't read it all but I'm getting the impression that a lot of pentax traditionalists (ie those that have been using Pentax for a long time) would prefer small 'ltd' style lenses. I think you need to remember that there may be a lot of newer pentax users coming from Canon or Nikon who have bought a K1 who want latest generation tech and optical performance and more 'standard' style pro lenses rather than quirky pentax lenses. I am one of those new Pentax converts (I don't own ANY legacy glass in either FF or 645 format and have no interest in it) and I personally will almost certainly buy this new lens and am very excited about it. Not dissing long time Pentaxians or legacy glass just making an observation

Looking at the 2017 roadmap It looks like there will also me an 85m f1.4 and a 20ish coming soon too so if they are all of the style of this 50 I think a lot of people will be happy (assuming they perform optically as we all expect/hope).

You'd be surprised- when the K-S1 was released, they didn't seem to realize that the LEDs on the grip wouldn't be visible during use But that's an entirely different can of worms.

Maybe the designers realized the grip LED functions (count-down timer and selfie head counter) would be used exclusively when the camera was not held by the grip.

The only surprising thing here, to me, is why the owner of PF would take such an unwarranted swipe at Pentax when the camera was first reviewed, and why he continues years later to do the very same. Just puzzling.

Called it! And that's definitely a lens I'll be picking up. Loved the FA* 85mm F1.4, but that bzzt bzzt has got to go.

You know, I'm actually with you, Cfraz.

I understand this is a minority view, but the textbook way to hold a camera is bearing all the weight from underneath using the left hand, with the elbow pointing to the ground, tucked into the tummy.

There should actually be no need for a manufacturer to include a side grip.

You might say, "I like to freely walk around holding it below my hip by that grip."

Okay, but straps - of various kinds - are there for a reason, too!

Definitely. Look where the IR ports are - covered by your hand or face except during use when your hand or face isn't anywhere near them.

If Ricoh wants to promote the K1 as a pro camera, it would be lovely if they could standardize filter thread diameters across lenses, so far we have 49mm (FA 35mm, FA 43mm, FA 50mm, DFA 50mm Macro, FA 77mm, DFA 100mm Macro), 58mm (FA 31mm), 62mm (DFA 28-105mm), 77mm (DFA* 70-200mm, DA* 200mm, DA* 300mm), 82mm (DFA 24-70mm), 86mm (DFA 150-450mm) & 112mm (DA 560mm).

This seems to me overly complicated, and with the addition of the new DFA* 50mm lens with a 72mm filter thread, even more so. If this is a prototype lens, I along with other Pentax Pro's would appreciate either upping the filter thread to 77mm like the other DFA*/DA* lenses, or releasing all new DFA* primes with 72mm filter threads. Otherwise, this lens seems to be thoroughly impressive at first glance.
