I'd expect they'll aim pretty high so that the lens performs admirably with pixelshift which is a level of performance that most other lens maker don't have to attain.

usd 1500,00 for a new ff 50,00 mm.
must be floating far above the other 50mm lenses,
a f1.2 or less. af faster than the light.

I'll quote myself:

If we look at other manufacturers' top-range 50mm-ish lenses:
- Canon has only the aging 50mm f/1.2 (launch price: 1600$). They're out of this game.
- Leica is obviously on another planet
- Nikon's 58mm, launch price 1700$
- Sigma's new 50mm Art, 950$ but that's a third party
- Sony, 2 lenses (FE and KM/Alpha), 1500$
IMHO there's no way a brand new premium D FA* 50mm f/1.4 could be less than $1000. Sorry, folks, you better start saving up.

I agree with the price assessment. Usually whatever Sigma offers is a little less expensive than a similarly performing Pentax lens. The DFA* 50mm has big size and weight, a lot like the Sigma 50mm Art, so we can expect them to be in the same "tier". And Zeiss lenses of similar FoV/aperture are usually 2x, 3x the price. If you look at the Otus 55mm, it fits the puzzle piece. I expect DFA* 50mm will be between $1100 and $1600 on release. But I won't mind if its cheaper
And having a DFA* 50mm in the lineup might differentiate Pentax from the other brands, as the other brands only have big massive supersharp 50mm lenses from third parties, at least at the moment (Sigma, Zeiss).
I'll still prefer a smaller, more compact 50mm prime, but hey, clearly there is a market for massive premium 50mm these days.

Well, I think it is clear that it has to be pegged above the DA *55 both with regard to cost (DA 55 is 650 on Amazon right now) and quality. It is a big piece of glass -- probably as big as some 85mm f1.4 lenses and as such, it isn't going to be cheap.

But I think the goal has to be to make waves by releasing glass that really stands out -- much like the FA 200 macro and A* 135 f1.8 have done in the past. Releasing a middling 50mm f1.4 that is sharp at f2.2 and about average for performance does nothing to increase Pentax's reputation and in point of fact, they already have several lenses that are in that spot (FA 50, DA *55 and FA 43 to name a few).

The new Pentax lens will be an interesting test. How many of these premium lenses are bought only because they present themselves as a "bargain" from third parties like Sigma and Tamron. When very nearly the same item is available from the camera-maker they are more expensive and so folks might easily persuade themselves that they "don't really need" it - in reality, they can't secure a seeming bargain. Of course a few people do buy the premium items, but i would be surprised if the market for them was more than modest. By the time ones gets into Otus or Leica territory, it is probably very small. Only a handful of people are going to spend this kind of money. Maybe Pentax really need two new lenses, the halo product very few will buy and the regular item one step down lots and lots of people will buy.
That's what i keep saying, make me an 18-35 ƒ4-5.6. But in truth, I have a FA 50 1.7 and an FA 50 macro 2.8, it is going to be really hard for them to sell me a 50mm lens no matter what they do. This is for the people who demand ƒ1.4 and while I understand their preference, it's not my preference. Most folks shooting K-70s or KPs etc, are they really going to look at a lens that costs more than their camera?

I think Pentax assumes the cheapskates such as myself will continue to be happy with legacy glass. They want to put out something for the high end crowd, like the 31, 43 and 77 limiteds were in their day.

Indeed, "cheapskates" (I would say, budget-conscious people) already have inexpensive options - but there's no truly high end one. That's required if they want to be seen as a top brand, IMO.

Personally for me it's more about things like updated glass, coatings (IQ) and new AF designs than it is a fast apature. I'm glad the legacy options are available but that isn't why I invested in a K-1. "Year of the prime" played into my decision.

Thats unfair. Both lenses were introduced before the recent price raising round, so at current level they'd be released at something between 2,000 and 2,200 EUR.

None of them are even close to stellar performers, so Pentax can easily offer more bang for the buck - again.

I do wonder about how many current Pentaxians would buy this lens over existing options. But that really isn't the point, is it? The point is to create a set of lenses that attract new photographers who seek excellence and have deep pockets -- not sure if they really exist, but they certainly could help the brand.

Living in Nashville I know a lot of staving musicians. I have watch a guy driving a $1,000 Honda load up $20,000 worth of guitars, amps, and equipment. There are a lot of staving photographers doing the same thing. A couple of years ago I had lunch with a couple of professional photographers. One complaining about not making any money and 10 minutes later she was checking the Fed-Ex shipping app to see if her new Nikon D4's (two of them) had shipped yet. She mostly shoots weddings. She has since switched over to Fuji which blows my mind, but whatever.
