Unfortunately "bigger is better" seems to be the marketing mantra today. Even the Mini Cooper has gotten bigger and don't even get me started with what they have done to the Jeep!

Every lens is a compromise. We already have the FA limited compromises. If you want strong center sharpness with decent corner sharpness at f3.5 to 4 then get an FA 43 limited. But what would be the point of making a slightly bigger FA 50 limited that is just slightly better? I think the whole point is that Pentax believes they have the small corner covered already and they are looking at other lenses that will help them stand out.

The only issue is not the fact that they are releasing "big" lenses, but that they are taking so long in releasing them at all.

Ha, according to ephotozine my SMC DA* 200 is higher rated.
Top 26 Best Pentax Lenses 2017

It's really hard to do comparisons. For the lenses I know ePHOTOzine's numbers are quite low. I guess each company has their own implementation. Like many sites, only the new releases have ben tested on the K-1, most having been tested on the K-5. The only cross comparison between the 70-200 and competing lenses is on price, not performance, so its not as good as what I've seen comparing Tamron, Nikon and Canon lenses. It's a complimentary review, I just can't decide what it means.

But just out of interest I checked the Milvus 35 test featured on the front page. 4500 lw/ph tested on a 50.6 MP sensor. Impressive. But the fact that it's tested on a 50.6 MP sensor makes it hard to compare.

Incidentally the numbers of the Milvus 35 are off the charts, but they test it on a 50.6 Canon 5Ds R, so I have no idea what that means in Pentax K-1 numbers.

I've always loved the fact that their only 'con' to that lens is "It doesn't fit other makes of camera to allow everyone to enjoy this lens."

So now you care about a half-subjective "rating"?

Just like with Photozone, DXOMark, etc. the numbers are not comparable between systems. And by the way, the DA* 200mm was tested on the K-7.

I don't really care. After being an advocate for the lens and seeing how many people it really doesn't impress because it just doesn't suit what they do, I just found it amusing that they rated it as the #1 Pentax lens. If it were court I'd say "This goes toward establishing the credibility of the witness your honour." A site that rates the 200 as the number one lens for Pentax, as far as I'm concerned has some serious credibility issues. From my experience again as an advocate for the lens, I surely hope no one goes out and buys it because of that rating. It's an excellent lens, but definitely is a focal length that doesn't suit every body's style. My DA* 60-250 , my favourite cross platform lens, didn't even get a mention. I don't get it. Excellent image quality, edge to edge, nicely corrected for CA, lighter than a 70-200, a telephoto on the K-3, a great walk around lens on the K-1, a lens several people have bought into Pentax just to be able to use it.... it's not even mentioned.

There's me and one other guy on the site with a DA*200 that I know of, and Drline sold his.

For the record, according to forum voting the 77 ltd is the #1 Pentax lens of all time, with he 31 ltd as the also ran.

If you were in court... advocates have other things in mind, than establishing the truth, don't they? This comparison isn't exactly in your favor.
The DA* 60-250 is losing at "performance" and "value for money". It was also reviewed 4 years after the DA* 200mm. But aren't you talking about those subjective ratings - as opposed to the actual measurements - because you want to reject their D FA* 70-200 review?
