Both B&H and Adorama - biggest U.S. distributors, I believe - are closing for 10 days starting tomorrow for Succos. Perhaps we'll get an announcement when they are back open and processing orders again. Why release something when your big order takers are closed and risk loosing the excited buyer?

DA* 55mm 1.4 updated with PLM motor would be nice for Christmas.

Is the PLM drive limited on the weight of the optics it can move? Had been thinking the new lenses would be DC motors due to size of the optics, but I don't know the engineering behind these mechanisms.

yes, it is, and my brain filtered what you wrote in expectation of what it thought it was reading - that the new 1.4 would be PLM - oops! I've often looked at the DA* 55 and thought of it as an alternative to the anticipated DFA* 50. Updated optics and updated drive mechanism and in turn assuming significantly faster AF has been what's got me holding out. I've not been buying other lenses either, e.g. the 77 Limited, in hopes of the new primes being sooner than later. This is a hobby for me, not a career, so I can wait. If I really "had to have it", I could always go buy the Samyang/Rokinon 85 or an older film era lens, but figure will just hang tight. I am a believer that if you want your favorite company to be around in the future, you better be ready to put your money where your mouth is. So, I've been saving and have my piggy bank ready to go to back up my LBA vocalization. Now we just need a couple lenses released.

DA* 55 is clearly a nice lens, but is no match to a quality of modernised optics and coatings like those we have in DFA* 70-200

The DFA should be a better performer, but will be bigger and much more expensive, just as the DA* 55 was to the FA 50.

Yep, which is why I'm patiently waiting for the new D FA* 50 and 85 versus buying older lenses.

I'd like to see a really excellent photog take a day's worth of shots with a DA*55 and then return with, say, that k-mount converted 50mm Zeiss Milvus that was for sale on the PF Marketplace, and really see just how much more likeable the images are with the Zeiss or the *55.

I'm not saying the Milvus isn't good; my point is that I think the *55 is a pretty good piece of hardware, "modern" or not.

The DA*55 is really a great piece of engineering, that can provide some stunning results. I will try to use it during the next week to show you what it can do.

I'm sure the DFA will be better just want some apsc love for my K-3. Most likely will be buying the DFA primes for my K-1.

I'm using the DA *55 as my Single In October lens and it's OK. But it could be better...

My copy of the DA*55 shines on the K-1. It is better than ever before on all my other bodys. I can recommend the DA*55 if you need a lens for Portrait shooting with that lengh.

@Rondec: f18 isn't the sweetspot of this lens. Best Resolution is between f4 and f11 if you look at the MTF charts
