Each person breaks the equation down a little differently. Using a 70-200 for weddings is fine. People expect a professional photographer to have big gear and that's not a problem. Having an extra stop to open up in low light situations is very handy to have. Most wedding photographers I know primarily use zooms and only use primes for the formal photographs. Having the flexibility is pretty important.

Regardless, they are both nice lenses and Canon has a lot more lenses in its line up and sells more lenses than Pentax. I just think price is a big factor in why people buy the f4 version of this lens. Certainly it isn't the only factor, but if both were priced the same, a lot of folks would buy the f2.8 version even though it's bigger.
It depends... The 70-200mm f4 lens it's the only zoom lens in my backpack. I'm not into weddings, but I do a few corporate events from time to time and I use prime lenses indoor (a 24mm lens, a 35mm and a 135mm lens) and the 70-200mm f4 for outdoor shots. I've initially rented for a week a 70-200mm f2.8 and I returned after day 2. I liked the flexibility, but:
- I hated the weight; shooting with a 70-200mm f2.8 for one and a half hours at a corporate event was a pain. My arms didn't appreciate the weight at all.
- I hated the size
- I hated the fact that that people stoped acting natural when they saw a big lens pointed at them, even if they knew I was there to take photographs. So, I removed the flash from my camera, I replaced the 70-200mm lens with a 135mm and was a lot better

If my interests will change and I will be covering weddings (althrough I doubt it) , a 24-70mm lens would probably be the main lens and a prime lens like 100mm f2 or 135mm f2 would be my choice as a tele lens. But again, the workflow is different from person to person. 70-200mm f2.8 it's a popular lens and I understand why (it's very good optically, it offers flexibility and it's very well build). But it's sooo incorfortable to use it for more than half an hour and for me it's a lens that it will be in backpack in the near future only if I will be covering sports events.

I don't know if a 70-200mm f4 lens it's important right now for Pentax users. I think some new fast primes (like 14mm, 20mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm) are a lot more important than the 70-200mm f4.

This is exactly what my thoughts are. There's the variable aperture 28-105 and the constant f2.8 24-70. This area is basically covered.

Dan Rentea's last post, about a lack of primes and what he likes to actually shoot with, also seems inline with my thoughts. Surprised we're now talking about duplicate zooms instead of complaining about lack of good modern primes.

Yes, and let's not forget about the planned D FA (non-*) 70-300-ish lens; if we can trust the roadmap, it's too long to be a 70-200 f/4. All that's left is a wide zoom which is cheaper and smaller (and obviously slower) than the 15-30, and we'd have full "pro" and "budget" zoom lines.
I'm sure many would appreciate a third, f/4 zoom line, I would likely make use of it... I just don't think it's realistic (in the short term).

Dan is using the extensive Canon line to his advantage, so it's in line with my thoughts as well. More important, Ricoh Imaging agrees with us.
The slight disagreement is with the "fast primes" part, I don't want a fast ultra-wide as it would be huge and expensive (precisely the reason I don't have the 15-30). Fortunately, the ultra-wide on the roadmap is not a D FA*, so I assume it won't be an f/1.4.
The 35-ish DFA* might be f/1.4 as well.

Is this lens coming? I'm interested. Really interested. It's something to dream about. I hope it's PLM and has an aperture lever. I want to use it on my k-5II.

Yeah, I like the approach of multiple tiers. Pentax has done this in the past, hope they continue.
Like, soon we will have DA 50mm f1.8 (light, affordable), DFA 50mm f2.8 (macro, sharp), DA* 55mm (premium, for portraiture), DFA 50mm f1.4 (top of the line beast, massive and expensive). This way anyone can get exactly what they like. Now, we can't expect so many choices for every focal length and zoom range, but its nice to have some choice

There's something like that on the roadmap, see the Telephoto Zoom Lens on the second page:
http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/japan/products/lens/images/K_Mount_Lens.pdf

As for its technical specs, we can only guess at this point.

Unfortunately, as a fellow K-5II owner, I have decided that the smart bet is to assume any new lens that comes out will not work on my camera. I don't think it's wise to assume that they're going to release new designs that work with this body in the future.

Yes, I would not assume this either - but it's also not impossible.
It depends if they see the electronic aperture just as a way of making the 55-300's RE(tractable) design, or as the future of the K-mount line.

You left out the FA 50 1.4 (although maybe that lens won't be around a lot longer?)

Meanwhile there's no prime in the 20's! Or the teens! I hope kenspo sent Ricoh a fax with all my good ideas on what they should be doing in that area.

I don't remember seeing the DFA Fish-Eye lens on the future road map. Has it been there all along, or was it added more recently?

It was added in February, together with the D FA telephoto zoom IIRC.

Thanks for the info. I remembered the telephoto being added but not the fish eye. Maybe we have just talked about the tele more.

Yeah, Pentax always were fan of Fish-eye zooms.
A bit original I reckon.
