(...) Lens RRPs are higher in Japan than in the US. For instance, the RRP at launch of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM | Art was ¥127,000 and $949.
At ¥150,000 the Tokina Opera would be 18% more expensive (RRP wise) than the Sigma Art.

It means that DFA*50/1.4 would be not lower than USD1500.

If my unfounded suspicions are correct and pentax is manufacturing the 50mm opera for Tokina (or at least the optical components) then they may be holding off pricing while they try and judge the interest for the tokina. The more units they make the lower cost per unit. They may have pricing control over the Tokina in that case, so they have told them it would maximum $1400, while pentax are estimating $1300 once everything is taken into account. Note, idle speculation!

Musing about price speculation, weren't the Pentax 12-24, 50-135, and various re-badged Tamron's all more expensive than the corresponding C&N mount variants from Tokina and Tamron? Something something lens coatings and WR were always the reason given as to why, although Pentax's warranties aren't not good compared to Tamron.

Not in the market for this lens, various reasons due to money, don't have FF, etc. but why so big? I know the motor has to go somewhere, but C&N, and previous Pentaxes weren't this big for a 50/1.4...it's looks like the lifted 4x4 of the camera world. The 72 mm thread is as large as my 16-85.

Optical formula + fast aperture + ring motor + (possibly) AW build. I'm sure it could have been smaller if the optical formula was simpler, but presumably it takes a lot of glass to get the performance we're expecting from this lens...

But hopefully not an "overcooked" and "overcompensated" optical design (like Sigma Art lenses) where the artistic characteristics of the lens take a back seat to the singular pursuit of "ULTIMATE SHARPNESS".

Hopefully not, Dave... The few test shots that have circulated thus far look great, but we need to see more - ideally from day-to-day use by members here.

I can't comment on the Sigma Art lenses generally. The only one I own is the much-maligned 30mm f/1.4, and that one has more character than you can shake a stick at. I love it. But edge-to-edge sharpness is not its strong suit

The words you are looking for are over corrected! Pentax has had a philosophy of producing sharp lenses with great rendering at the expense of correcting things like CA and coma.

The new DFA* lenses are about producing a lens that is sharp wide open, well corrected, and with great rendering, including 3D pop which requires lots of microcontrast. This requires lots of glass elements and exceptional lens coatings to stop loss of contrast.

The DFA*70-200 proved it can be done, at the expense of weight. The 50 has the same philosophy. Limiteds have a different philosophy.

Pentax has a history of "images for the way people take pictures not for the test charts" The 28-105 designed by Saori is a great example, of Pentax bumping the resolution while staying true to their original design philosophy. They've simply gone from great rendering at the expense fo resolution to great rendering and great resolution. Anyone who's worked with that lens knows exactly what I'm talking about. I'm guessing the 50 will be the same.

Third party manufacturers sell in larger volumes and are often simpler, so lower prices.

High charpness on f1.4 requires more glass elements. FA 50/1.4 has 7 elements, DA* 50/1.4 have 9 and Sigma ART 50/1.4 have 13 elements. Then the lens becomes bigger/ longer.

The DPR 'hands on' says this is 'WR' not 'AW'? I thought AW was used on '*' lenses? Or am I confused?
