Yah well, ya know... if we never find any Tokina patent related to a 11-18/2.8, maybe it's just because Pentax took the Tokina 11-20/2.8 and limited it to 18mm 'cos the 18-20mm wasn't good enough to their standards.
Seems far fetched but IMO I don't see other option (which doesn't mean there's none).

The sigma diagram looks like this:

The D FA* 50mm 1.4

Focus group is pretty similar. The difference is in the front group
The Pentax design has more elements. Does that hint towards a better correction?

Could be the "Large-aperture Wide-Angle Single Focus" on the roadmap.

OK - I suppose, looking at this the other way round, Asahi Man is claiming the third lens will be out next year, same as the 85mm, but we don't even know the focal length yet. 35mm would be the conventional logic, I just wondered if there was something more definite that I'd missed.

Interesting though that Pentax would slap the '*' on a Tokina design, when they didn't do it with any of the Tamron lenses, despite e.g. the 15-30 f/2.8 having a stellar reputation (it dethroned the Nikon 14-24).

On a different note: I hope I am not too impudent, but does anyone know who asahiman is? I've always wondered. He (or she) seems to have pretty accurate knowledge of some Pentax interna and the Japanese camera industry in general, and the majority of his (or her) claims turn out to be true, it's just that every time I spread such information (e.g. on DPR or the German DSLR Forum) and get challenged on the source, all I can say is 'Someone who usually knows said so on some other forum ..."

The DFA * 50/1.4 is a Pentax design and as it seems the DA 11-18 is also Pentax design (or modification-optimization to Pentax standards) based on the existing Tokina optical formulas, hence the * designation.

Didn't asahiman write that the three f/1.4 primes are Pentax designs, but the new APS-C zoom is a Tokina?

Yep, indeed.

Asahiman wrote: "the new APS-C zoom is patented and developed by tokina" but as far as I understand, there is a slight difference between rebadging an existing lens with Pentax glass and coatings (like what happened with the DFA 15-30/2.8) and developing a new lens based on previous Tokina designs and experience and Pentax having a word on the final product specifications and performance.

The tamron lenses were manufactured by tamron. The 11-18 is manufactured by pentax, and may have had significant input by pentax into the final formula. Ie its co-designed and manufactured by pentax.

I Just did a quick measure up and the Pentax 11-18 is definely a new lens relative to the Tokina 11-16 and 11-20.
The front lens element is 46mm vs 53.5 (11-20) and 49(11-16).
It also appears to have a tighter curvature and as a consequence of the small front element gives the impression of a longer optical stack than the other two.

The 11-18 is probably a different version of the Tokina 11-20 F2.8 which was the successor to the Tokina 11-16 F2.8. Adding a new body design and AW weather sealings and Pentax coatings it will be a very interesting lens offering

I am going to wait on the reviews. If the 50 blows the 24 - 70 out of the water for edge to edge sharpness it will be tempting. I am interested in the 24 - 70 for the 35mm and 50mm ranges. They are outstanding from everything I have read. This could be a tough decision as I will only buy one of them.

Reviews of the 50mm shouldn't be too far away - I'm confident that it will be class above the excellent 24-70 in absolute IQ, but obviously much more specialised - it would only make sense if you need what it can do that the 24-70 can''t - and (apart from the maximum aperture) that's overkill for most situations.I'd say - but you know your needs, I don't

The 1.4 is not a necessity; but if the center and edge to edge sharpness is on par with the Zeiss Planar T* FE 50mm F1.4, the new 50 will be near impossible to pass on.

To me it looks like the Sigma uses a more wide angle design for the front group. Just conveying the relatively sharp center to the focus group. The Pentax lens seems more linear.

DFA* 50mm F1.4 is here~Test images

As an Imaging Ambassador for Ricoh Pentax USA, I'm currently testing the new K-1 MkII, and they also sent me the new 50mm F1.4 DFA*. Here are 2 images to take a peek at, saved at 8 X 12, 300 dpi, and Level 10 JPG. These are Unsharpened, FYI. (NOTE, they appear unnaturally dark on the PF website, and the color is off too, sorry).

Attached are the exposure data for each image, a sunrise at Bryce Canyon on March 1, and an arch in the Grand Staircase Escalante on February 28.

Both were shot with the K-1 Mk II, and I'll post more images taken with that, soon.

Kerrick James
