There was a "discussion" about this before and all indications point to Pentax applying their own coatings to the DFA 15-30 and 24-70 lens elements. I don't know about aperture blades or anything else. There's advertising that says they use the various expected coatings from Pentax.

This thread is a bit more fun today. Some days it's kind of depressing.

And what if the D FA* 85mm f/1.4 has all 3 characteristics - fast, sharp, soul?

What's the word "if" doing in there?

It's expressing uncertainty about this lens - if I can't afford it, it would definitely lack a characteristic or two (or so I'll try to convince myself)

Have a little faith! I believe it will be an excellent piece of hardware and I know I won't be able to justify buying it at the price it will command.

Yep, it's into the divisional playoffs.
LOL, thanks guys. Honestly though, since this thread is already WAAAY off the rails, I would love a modern, contrasty, and flare-resistant FF 20-ish prime to fill the gap where my DA 15 Ltd resides on APS-C. That FOV is a good balance, in my opinion, between wide field and weird rectilinear edge distortion.

But if it's as big and heavy as a can of beans, I don't want it.

Considering how many lenses I already own, and that my needs for more are essentially zero, this is one lens I would actually save up for and buy. The only thing I miss from APS-C is the 15mm limited. I've been tempted to buy one again just to use in crop mode.

Since the 15mm was #1 on my shopping list right before I decided to wait for the FF, I agree with the previous post.

My original intent when I sold the K-3 and bought the K-1 was to keep the 15 Ltd. (and then keep ALL the DA Ltds.) and shoot them on K-1 in crop mode - like having a K5Ii.

Then along came the KP .

The reality is that very few people are paying attention to what Ricoh is doing. If they miss a release date by a year or two nobody outside of the very small group of people on the forums will even talk about it. Ricoh is amazingly close to having a very competitive system, but they seem reluctant to invest in the Pentax brand. There is no energy. No direction. No sense of urgency.
To me it seems they are just cautions and take small steps. It's not like some guy in the Ricoh management thinks for a few minutes and then he just decides "Let's just make a lot of lenses, throw them all in and we're fine." Probably there is a lot of thinking, studies etc. before embarking on a new project, to check if it's economical or not. I work for an oil and gas company and you don't wanna know how much work goes into just deciding if we're gonna drill a well or not, before actually drilling the well. I imagine it's similar with Ricoh (perhaps on a smaller scale).

The Tammy 15-30 f2.8 really shook things up, many saying it had replaced the Nikon 14-24 as the finest UW zoom in the world. Pentax jumped on it.
The Pentax 24-70 is also based on Tamron, I have been using it for a while and I think it's also very good.

Careful now, that shelf is going to break someday.

I'm also waiting for it... it's on the roadmap. Maybe it will come this year... or at least announced.

The story goes, this K-1 project (which obviously includes the lenses) was pushed by engineers rather than management. Indeed, its success was not obvious (to the entire company).

I can fit most of my kit into a single backpack.

So, the shelf will have to support the weight of the backpack also. Not good

The main reason I'm not getting the 15-30 is to not overburden the shelf

i also want a ff wide prime... unfortunately it'll be a long wait since they're releasing a 50 (already offer the 55, 50mm macro, 50mm 1.8 (ff?)) and an 85 (already offer 77, 70) before something wider than 31mm.

That is why I bought the Samyang 24mm as a stop gap lens. Although it does not autofocus my first impression is that it is a fine landscape lens which correspondes nicely with my main interests. (And yes I joined the ranks of the K-1 owners.) I am still interested in a wide Pentax lens with autofocus and hopefully some form of weather sealing. But only when I've recovered from my latest spending spree...

There are the Irix 15mm 2.4 and 11mm F4
Samyang 24 1.4 20mm 1.8 14mm 2.8 12mm 2.8 fish eye and 24mm 3.5 tilt/shift

Legacy Pentax K: 15mm 3.5, 18mm 3.5, 20mm F4 24mm 2.8 and 3.5 and a 17mm F4 Fish eye
Pentax-m 20mm F4 (I have that one, it's nice)
Pentax-A: 16mm F3.5 15mm f2.8 Fish Eye 20mm F2.8 24mm F2.8
And then there are the AF FA* 24mm F2 and FA 20mm F2.8.
You can also look for the Sigma Super-Wide II 24mm F2.8 There is an AF and MF version.
The Sigma 15mm X DG 2.8 fish eye is still for sale and too many legacy Sigma wide angles for k-mount to mention:

There must be something there for everybody until the 20 or 24mm F1.4 arrives (and there is a fish eye zoom coming too).
