a new design philosophy at Pentax' laboratory.
Its not just a new design, as i have tried to explain to the boring point! Its about making glass that keeps up with the development in sensors and cameras. Its not like they build them bigger just for fun. Pentax can't stay in the past if they want to survive. But nothing keeps you from using the old glass.

Small & light, big & sharp, your K-1 will be great for whichever lens philosophy you go for.

* lenses were never as compact as Limiteds, so I think people that want small primes should relax and wait until Ricoh rolls out f1.8/f2 primes. I'm pretty sure there will be something styled like Takumars from bygone era, with DC motors and WR (20 - 40 Limited, anyone?)

Nothing to be concerned about, The FA Ltd trio will still be available and likely to be cheaper. New DFA* primes are needed to support the K1 and future FF models. After the DFA*s who knows, Pentax may release affordable compact primes like the DA Ltd series for FF.

When buying the K-1, I also decided to not buy more second hand lenses. I have the A* 85mm, and had been thinking of getting the FA* 85. And so I changed my mind and will only buy another lens if it's weather sealed and optimized for the digital sensor.
Handling the 150–450 mm, and seeing the new D-FA* 50mm I'm a bit concerned. Small and light have always been the Pentax speciality. That's why I chose the brand in the eighties, and that has been a reason to stay.
I'm not going to jump, but maybe I'll settle with what I've got or maybe look for the FA Limited trio if the new 50mm and 85mm points in a new design philosophy at Pentax' laboratory.
The A* and FA* primes were never lightweights. They have always been large lenses focused on IQ above all else. Hello A* 135/1.8, FA* 600/f4

So a 35mm F1.4 A 18 or 20mm F1.8-->2.8, 8-18 fisheye zoom???? The 65-300 is new. But it is obvious Pentax needs a lighter telezoom since the DA models don't cover the sensor adequately.

85/1.4 was kinda obvious from the map, even if it remained unveiled and just a marker line.
However, those wideangle lenses are far more interesting unknowns — I wish if Ricoh had revealed one of them instead.

The fish eye zoom would be great for 360 Panoramas with high resolution.

Exactly. There are currently plenty of limited lenses out there, both DA limited (I count 6 including the zoom) and FA limiteds. These, along with the DA 35 and DA 50/FA 50 and DFA 100 macro WR are Pentax's compact lenses now.

Folks act as though Pentax didn't have big lenses in the past, but the FA * line up was not exactly tiny. There clearly were different goals driving the production of, say, the FA 77 limited from the FA *85. Pentax is just trying to give us more options and if the limited lines work best for a photographer, they will still be there. It is just that now we will have the opportunity to buy fast aperture glass that has been engineered to be sharp from wide open.

IS the 85mm on show?

Anybody know if the 85mm is also on display in prototype form at the show or can we expect to see/handle these at the end of March at the UK Photography Show in Bimringham?

Refreshes or replacements of existing lenses don't necessarily appear on the roadmap. The 55-300 PLM came out of nowhere, as did the 18-50 RE. I still wouldn't be surprised if we eventually see some previously unmentioned updates of the existing compact lenses. I think having this new huge glass as an option is great for the brand. I also love the old compact glass, can still buy it, and don't share the worries that Pentax won't make new versions because I don't expect that to be the case.

I have an FA*85 already. I am still delighted and will start saving up for the upgrade.
From the road map it seems the FA31 is getting a make over. And the ultra wide seems to be a 20 not 24. So may be I was wrong in speculating that it was a 24.
That fish eye almost makes me think .. its 8-16 and possibly a sigma rebadged. Regardless.. the road map seems promising and the 50 and 85 news tells me more about Pentax re-establishment into the market. I have seen people shoot with FF+85 most of their career. So this one was imminent but I am having goose bumps about the fact that it came sooner than I thought.

Anything wider than about 15mm in the 35mm format is getting quite specialized in my opinion. I feel like it's like a huge, oversized burger. Might look good from afar, but actually pretty impractical when you get one in your hands.

This is amazing news about the 85 1.4!
