Going much past f2 max aperture seems like a good way to end up with either a huge lens, a lens that really doesn't perform that well until stopped down quite a bit, or both. Not the lens I'm personally hoping for.

And even 24mm and 28mm are noticeably different lenses. It's not without reason that Zeiss' primes include a 21mm, 25mm and a 28mm.
Pentax has a lot of work to do to be a serious option for those that choose a set of high quality primes instead of a few standard zooms. As Zeiss does not intend to get involved in K mount again, and Sigma does neither, Pentax has all the work to do itself.
Leitax K mount to customize Zeiss (Nikon) ZF.2 lenses is a workaround, but not very attractive for those not wanting to tinker with +1000,- euro lenses, and sacrifice all metadata transfer and other communication to the camera.
I currently use a Zeiss 25/2 ZF.2 and 28/2, 35/2 and 50/2 ZK on the (very similar sensor to K1) Sony A7r, and although not everyone will feel the need for four primes in the region very wide-to-normal, it is simply not enough for Pentax to release a single very wide prime. At least not if they want to draw in many new users.

the sooner pentax/ricoh gets new lenses out the more money they will make for future lenses

Those photos are just fantastic, something you can't hope to get with a smaller system. Also, that's subjective, some people saying low grade gear is enough may not see the difference.

I think about $1400. North of $1500 is too much; Canon's f/1.2 is $1800-1900 and that's always going to be the pinnacle. You don't want someone saying "I can get the world's best 85mm for $300 more." $500 more, though, and that starts to get tough.

I'm packing right now for a long haul back home to the Far East for six months. It's a nightmare with the K-1 and 15-30, DFA* 70-200 and even the small primes (50/1.2, 31, 43, 77, 100 WR etc.), a heavy laptop, couple of flashes.

30 kilo max baggage and I'm still at 34 kilos. Can't take my Induro tripod, can't take any of the Cactus strobist gear. Can't imagine hauling any more hefty lenses.

I agree. Slightly slower is much smaller and lighter. More likely to get used.

Do you really use all that stuff? I keep extensive statistics on what I use for every kind of shoot and vacation so that I only take stuff I really need. I've also been trying to get rid of stuff and keep only the equipment I really use often.

Hard to know how to roll a kit together around a K-1. Maybe keep track of which lenses you end up using out of that collection and pair down a little when it's all done? Those are all nice lenses but most of those are kind of large & heavy. I know it's not the same comparing to a crop based kit, but I'm headed to New York City in about a week and with my K-5 II I'll have an smc DA 15 (museums, wide outdoor shots / buildings once in a while), a DA 18-135 (almost everything else + bad weather if it happens), and maybe my DA 35 f2.4 (I don't have FA 31 money, not sure if I want to go slower than the f2.4 max with an F 28mm) and that's more than enough. I could probably do the whole thing with a good 28mm and the 15.

Yup! Six months is a long time there. It can get seriously dull and repetitive and the reason many end up alcoholics who start their day with rice moonshine. It's good to have a selection of gear in the dry cabinet to stop one from going mad.

This is what I do. After every trip, I make a count of every lens I used for each shot and calculate percentages. I do this for all my photoshoots too. I compile stats for each shoot, each convention, and then aggregate at the end of the year.

I've owned a bunch of lenses--I've sold 14 of the buggers. And I don't mean "Oh, I bought another Legacy 50mm lens so now I have 10 of the things." Renting lenses and such is nice and all but the only real way to determine whether something will work long-term is to buy it and work with it. If it doesn't meet my needs, I sell it and look elsewhere.

I'm going to sell off all the unused gear when I get back. All the Sony stuff. Loads of old glass. Get it down to essential only. Some stuff I'm leaving in the Thailand house for eldest daughter, a K-5IIs and some AF lenses, Metz 52 etc.

It is scary the mass of kit we accumulate over the years.

Unless they kick Canon out of the 'world's best 85mm' spot.

I am totally, 100%, not in the market for an 85mm prime. So I'm uninformed; what makes folks say that the Canon 85 1.2 is "world's best"? The Siggy 85 Art seems quite well liked, Nikon has something there that is well spoken of, and Canon too. Maybe Zeiss has something here, Leica probably as well, not sure who else would be in the running.

Or, to put it another way, there's lots of good 85's out there right now, and I look forward to a Pentax star lens to help get new interest going for Ricoh.
