I've often wondered about that - if I ever bought into Canon, it would be for that lens, but even Nikon doesn't seem interested in something similar - maybe too tied up with patents?

The D FA* 85mm 1.4 is not a rumor it is news (or it was when Ricoh put it on the roadmap at cp+).

Indeed, because it's basically a RED product. RED have sold their camera business to Ricoh and are henceforth focussing on smartphones with holographic screen (google "RED Hydrogen One").
