Besides, I think the view is simply seeing something launched by Pentax versus the quiet nothing we are in at the moment.
Most camera makers announce new products in September. Two reasons for this:
- a lot of pentax are away , on vacation, no always following the latest news;
- end of year if when sales of electronic products are peaking.
Announcing new product when a larger number of people are willing to buy is a winning strategy.
Announcing new products in summer time and nothing around September-November time frame is the worst thing to do.
It is rare to have people expecting any camera company to release new products in the middle of summer , if Ricoh would do that, they would be the only ones.

No, they wouldn't. Leica TL2 was announced on July 10th. Nikon announced the AF-P Nikkor 70-300mm F4.5-5.6E ED VR three days ago and the successor to Nikon D810 is expected to be announced on July 25th.

In 2016:

- Fujifilm announced the X-T2 on July 7th
- Sony the Zeiss Planar FE 50mm F1.4 ZA on July 11th
- Phase One the Schneider Kreuznach 40-80mm LS F4.0-5.6 and 75-150mm LS F4.0-5.6 'Blue Ring' zoom lenses on July 18th
- Samyang the XEEN 135mm T2.2 on the same day
- Leica the silver version of the APO-Summicron-M 50mm F2 ASPH on July 20th
- Nikon the AF-S Nikkor 105mm F1.4E ED on July 27th
- Samyang the 35mm F1.2 ED AS UMC CS on August 1st
- Casio the EX-FR200 on August 5th
- Samyang the 20mm F1.8 ED AS UMC on August 8th
- Nikon the D3400, the AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm F3.5-5.6G and the AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm F4.5-6.3G ED on August 17th
- Tamron the SP 90mm F2.8 Di Macro and TAP-in console for Sony A-mount on August 19th
- Canon the EOS 5D Mark IV, the EF 16-35mm F2.8L III USM and the EF 24-105mm F4L IS II USM on August 25th
- Fujifilm the X-A3 and the Fujinon XF 23mm F2 R WR on the same day
- Sony the FE 50mm F2.8 Macro on August 30th

and so on and so forth.

Ricoh Imaging are slowing down the rhythm of announcement of ILC-related Pentax-branded products, that's all:

2013: 19 new products (compact cameras excluded)
2014: 11 new products
2015: 10 new products
2016: 7 new products
2017 YTD: 1 new product.

Could be a silver edition. September / November time frame is often chosen for announcing new products, rarely summer time.
For the time being, people are more or less on vacation. Wait and see.
Actually late August has often been Pentax' preferred time to announce new products that will be available for shipping around Black Friday

Indeed, until 2014.

Yes, you are right about that. The market slows down , they adapt. Market leader are still releasing more products, if they sell it's good for them, if not , it may turn out a bit painful. Despite Sony making big waves with the A9, not sure how well it will sell. I recently visited my dealer and they were asking me opinion about starting a camera and lens rental service because apparently the the newer camera such as A9, GFX50s are too expensive for people to buy, so they basically sell nothing of the newest models, and the previous sub $2 models were selling and are still selling reasonably. That means, above a certain price range, the number of customers drops sharply...

Hype is not the same as sales, right?
The A9 is much hyped, perhaps understandably so (though much of it is marketing); however, it's easy to hype a product but shelling out $4500 is more difficult. I've read some time ago that Nikon's D4 target production volume was 5000 units per month, that was in 2012 - when camera makers were expecting a 40% increase of the ILC market (we know how that went!). That was 6 times lower than for the D800, and it's lower than the K-1's target production volume (7000 units per month).

Indeed, because it's basically a RED product. RED have sold their camera business to Ricoh and are henceforth focussing on smartphones with holographic screen (google "RED Hydrogen One").
I'm sensing a slight hint of sarcasm in you're statement here, but there was a rumor going around a year or two ago, from one of our reliable insiders (ashaiman or kenspo), that Ricoh was planning on buying out RED and adding it to their portfolio of companies. AFAIK, that hasn't happened, but you wouldn't by any chance have some important info under your belt?

Irregardless, I think adding RED to your portfolio wouldn't be a terrible idea, and cross seeding tech between Pentax and Red would be beneficial to both parties IMHO.

Of note is that 2013 is when they tweaked the DA limiteds by adding HD coatings and rounding their aperture blades and did the same with the DA 55-300. While those were technically new products, I did not personally look at them as such.

Yes, I was asking because it's nice to see that Pentax is alive and well. Any long quiet periods are a cause of worry for me.

I understand your point. If you subtract these six revamped lenses from the list, that gives us:

2012: 13 new products (compact cameras excluded)
2013: 13 (+ 6) new products
2014: 11 new products
2015: 10 new products
2016: 7 new products
2017 YTD: 1 new product.

Would be interesting to know how many K-1's are actually sold each month. 7,000 units a month sounds like a lot to me. Would also like a peak at lens sales numbers for the k-mount, find out what is selling best.

As for the latter: most certainly one of the 18-50mm / 18-55mm kit lens variants.

I don't know of any camera company that reveals sales of models to its own shareholders, let alone the public.

The disadvantages of doing si obviously vastly outweigh the advantages.

My general point is that there are fewer new products than what your list looks like. In the year 2013, there also is listed K30 (9 colors) -- not a new product, K-01 blue -- not a new product, GR and GR limited edition (should only be counted once). In 2014, there was the Q7 "crystal series" (not a new product), Q7 premium kit (not a new product), K3 prestige edition (not a new product), KS-1 sweets edition, and so on.

In 2014, I see new products as being: HD converter, 645z, film duplicator, 645 28-45 lens, QS-1, K S-1, DA 16-85 and Theta. And while the Theta and film duplicator are technically new products, they certainly weren't necessarily things that folks here were salivating after.

Part of the problem, I suppose is that the consumer lenses are done with production, which leaves premium lenses. Those lenses have a higher expectation and need more engineering to complete and do well. Probably part of the reason why the 645 series of lenses is so slow in growing.

I never thought Ricoh would share any of that info, I just thought it'd be interesting. And I never meant to consider kit lenses.
