Maybe Yi would be interested in purchasing the Brooklyn Bridge as well.

You mean purchase Ricoh theta group and leave Pentax inside Ricoh's group. DLJ could purchase Pentax for the 645z, but they already have Hasselblad, and the K1 would be too heavy to hang under a drone.
No just the k-mount. It is a complete system for them. Yi is interested in photography in many different fields and adding a full line of dslr would be a great start for them.

Buying what isn't for sale is called theft, however "Pentax" is somewhat difficult to steal.

(Yeah, I get it, you're just posting FUD...)

yes, they've designed and introduced some cameras, but they may need to get the know how from an existing camera company to speed up their learning curve.

There is a lot to gain for them.

Might they just produce something making sense and *maybe* they would gain something buying any photo company.
Buying tech and know-how when you dunno what to make of it is utterly stupid and short sighted.

Welkome to the world. That happens more often then maybe is healthy. That is how Hoya bought Pentax. And sometimes it works.

YI first attempt has some merit....their idea of bringing over their phone users to a real camera is GOOD for the photography industry.

Most of the reviews and tests that exist online were done when it was released,SO at that stage it wasn't a good camera.

But now that a few firmware updates have been issued, some of the shortfalls have been overcome.

Now, I'm not saying its a good camera....but its a start for them. The native lenses aren't great but the lenses from other M4/3 makers do OK.

I know where your statement is coming from :-) . Companies are very much like houses, you can clean them up, refurbish them and resell them with a profit. Or like cars, you buy two old cars of the same model, and use one for the spare parts, repair the other one and sell it. Eventually , no one care of what happens afterward, as long as the operation was profitable to the dealer.

LOL. I'm really disappointed, Ron. We all realize you are working on your phD in "poke the dozing bear with a stick," but this effort is way below even your usual contribution.

You're going to have to step up your game a bit if you want to stay in the program.

According to dipreview, Yi Technology have now come out of the Chinese corner with a Theta of their own, claiming 5.7K as well as 4K whatever that really means in practice.
The YI 360 VR camera is an important product.

YI is known to bypass non-Chinese companies with less traditional products than a DSLR. GoPro now is in deep trouble because it can't compete with YI anymore. Even Google choose to partner with YI for its VR Jump project. Not GoPro. Not Ricoh Theta. Known as the YI Halo (17,000 USD).

YI has a very transparent spec sheet. They use two 4k camera and two 220 degree lenses. If distortion free, it would yield 6.3k. In practice, they obtain 5.7k which sounds about right.

5.7k VR is 1580 per 100 degree eye lens. Within a typical 50 degree FV, you are left with 790 pixels width. That about PAL quality TV, about the minimum one may actually accept. 4k VR (or even HD VR) are below the minimum quality threshold.

So yes, this YI 360 VR culd be the first affordable VR camera which isn't a toy actually. Which unfortunately includes the 4k Theta.

saw this on adorama tv and come to PF....

Finally, hopefully .... WR!!!

PS...
you know... i wanted the Theta but image and video is behind, and no WR. Keep waiting for the next iteration.... but

I just bought Hero 5, along with all those accessories... spent more than 550 already.
.. and planning to get a gimbal.

Sigh.. timing. I honestly think Theta is one of the most unique product we have to compete with others. Put more resources in this please!
