The MD-S (K1 prototype) killed it. The FF 6mp camera costed a fortune to develop (20 000 000 dollars to be exact). In order to get some of the money back, they engineered the MZ-S from it. This meant that the pro MZ-1 was shelved. There was no market for two expensive Pentax SLR's. The Pentax engineers were generally pissed off by this, and most of them though that the DSLR was madness. Both the MD-S and the MZ-1 were very close to production.

You have that backwards--the K1 was derived from the MZ-S, which was designed from the ground up as a new camera, inheriting only little in the way of body shape & layout from other Pentax models.

Not according to its designer who is my source. The MZ-S was designed from a DSLR.
