The new Olympus is 12MP, which suggests the new Ricoh is built on the older 16MP hardware again. Suggests a refresh of software only?

My brother purchased a TG-4 very recently, and at the time there were no Ricoh options in stock anywhere. By contrast the Olympus was available through several stores in his city, including big name chain retailers.

Maybe no 4k in this camera and not needing a new sensor.

Sounds very much like they don't need a new camera at all then.

As long as it sells, I don't see any issue in making this new model. It is a complete product on order, so only sales departement is busy with it.

I thought that Ricoh stated that the company is withdrawing from these kind of compacts....

Ricoh never said so. A new firmware update in an old body is hardly going to cost them any development budget though. let's hope it has a modern 4k capable processor and chip. But since it doesn't say 4k on the body, I don't think so.

WG-series has been at a technological standstill since the WG-3 came out in 2013. Perhaps consumers really don't care for features or image quality? I mean, who needs 4K video underwater?

That said it would be nice to get some updated, faster hardware- sub-par performance can really hurt the brand image, and there's definitely still potential with the WG line.

The Oympus version is highly rated. I literally just researched this for my brother, and it consistently came up number one in reviews for rugged travel cameras. In the end he purchased the Olympus TG-4 variant, after going to check out the Ricoh version, and finding no one had it in stock. By contrast the Olympus was on offer in lots of places. The need's not huge in the market, but it's a section that does sell, albeit in small numbers overall.

As an aside, what does being under water have to do with recording resolution? If one wants the best video quality possible to record their travel experiences, then a 4K capability could appeal. 4K is simply a resolution, like 720 or 1080. It will become the standard very quickly, and Pentax will need to react. Pentax can't keep throwing out its standard video package forever, DSLRs included, bearing in mind directly your comments above about sub par offerings being damaging to a brand.

eventually 4k will be the industry standard and Ricoh will only be able to avoid it by not including it in the firmware.
