Eric Kim becomes an even bigger fan ...

International street photographer Eric Kim (personally, I'm not a fan of his style, but this is all subjective, right?) often writes for PetaPixel. Here, he gives fashion shooting a go, concluding:

" ... if you were a commercial photographer with a passion for street photography, I would probably recommend a combination of getting a compact Ricoh GR II camera for the streets, and a Pentax 645z for your commercial work."

Excellent post clackers. It is good to hear from a photographer instead of a bean counter. Ricoh/Pentax is very much alive and well.

I was never aware Eric Kim has a photographic style.

Well, he does a lot of Bruce Gilden/Martin Parr ripoff stuff, but that's just my opinion.

If you're ever worried about your photography, take a look at his work and do the opposite would be another opinion.

It takes about ~20 years of dedicated work to develop some sort of style; and even then it is nothing too serious. Gilden started photography in 1968, and Eric Kim started copying him several years ago. He is still at the level of socialising with people; he probably will never be a photographer. Maybe a bus coach or a tourist guide for Tokyo, which is a decent occupation.

Kim sounds indeed like very awkward these days, if you wanna speak about real photography...

Not that there's anything wrong with being a coach or tourist guide, but Eric's doing well enough out of commercial photography and related pursuits. Whether you like his work or not is, as @clackers said, entirely subjective (personally, I'm not a big fan, though I applaud his efforts). But, he's writing and selling photography articles and books, and running paid-for workshops and experiences for other photographers, plus of course selling prints. I'd say that's a pretty decent occupation too, and I respect him for getting out there and doing it

Photography is a silent art, and Kim talks too much.

If it's that silent, why do we (you and I included) talk about it so much on forums?

Photography (or any art, for that matter) is whatever the artist wants it to be - not what someone else thinks it should be. Other people's judgements - yours and mine - are never more than subjective, and entirely within our own frame of reference. It's a personal thing. If you enjoy it, or if your goal is to make money from it and you succeed in doing so (and even if you don't), it's all good. Kim seems to be doing that, and while his work and some of his opinions may not be for me, I say good luck to him

I enjoy his work and I wish him continued success. That doesn't mean I love everything he does, heck, I don't love a lot of what I do.

I don't believe he is the best street photographer out there anymore than I believe Ken Rockwell is a great artist. Neither am I interested in attending one of his workshops even though street photography is a genre I am interested in but not really very good at.

However, what I do enjoy is that he is out there making it work for himself. He is not on any welfare rolls and he is not trying to scam me into buying anything. Whether you believe he belongs where he has managed to place himself is actually immaterial. He understands web marketing and google search optimization. That puts him where he is.

And I think his little articles on what a given photographer taught him about street photography was a neat idea and usually make for some entertaining reading.
