Any news on a DA* 600mm lens?

Has anyone heard, or know of the likelyhood of Pentax making a DA* 600m lens around a f4?

This is one thing holding me up on buying a K20D. I like the camera, but this is a lens that I need. I've looked around for a 600mm lens, but cant find a nice one. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction on one?

Thanks!

Here's a used one if you are serious:
Used Pentax | Telephoto 600mm f/4.0 ED IF SMCP-F Auto | 24880

there was one in the marketplace a while back that looked real clean if you are near harrisburg pa (I don't know if it's still around though)

Check with KEH photo--They show a Pentas FA* 600mm in transit. No price given, but be prepared for more than $5000.

My local shop shot me a VERY good price on one of these. I'll be shooting near water and in the elements quite a bit, so I really like the idea of the weather seals on the DA*.

Why do you say that? And what would you go with then?

Sorry, but I'd rather have the Sigma 200-500 f/2.8 if I was going to switch systems...

Who wants to 'zoom with your feet' when your lens alone is 15 pounds plus!

You aren't familiar with the FA600/4 I presume? It is special order, but it is available, and it is an excellent lens.
To the OP, a reduced image circle 600mm lens isn't practical. At this focal length, the native image circle is huge.

Can some of you people with a desire for such a lens please enlighten me as to why you don't just shoot 4/3's to save on cash and bulk on an extreme telephoto lenses? If I did much of that type of photography I think I'd rather buy and Olympus-E3 and mount a Biggma on it. You can get a pro-grade body and nice lens to get the same field of view for less than half the price of one 600mm prime. Plus you'd then have two systems to play with instead of one.

canon is the king of long glass. let's say i wanted 600mm glass right now ... i go to B&H and lookie here, In Stock. no jumping through hoops, no special orders, no mythical supply channels. 600mm | B&H Photo Video

must serious photographers don't use the bigma b/c the quality isn't up their standard and it's rather slow on the longer ends

If you want to get more extreme telephoto effects, using K10, K200 or K20, simply crop the image. There is more than enough detail in there. The K10 full image can easily be printed to 24 x 36 inches with an in focus and properly exposed image. Cropping the image to the same size as the 4/3 system would use about 3/4 of the APS-C image. Using the K200 or K10, you would still have a 7.65 Mp image (1.5/2 * 10.2). This is more than adequate for an 11x14 inch print. A good 6 Mp image is easily printed to magazine cover size. (Check with the pros that have had magazine covers that size - I am quoting George Lepp on the 6 Mp)
