Same firmware AFAIK. There haven't been any updates lately but the word on the street is that sensor-based video stabilization may be making a return.

Don't Pentax cameras usually ship with v1.0 even on later production runs?

It depends, but historically special editions have shipped with the latest firmware (currently available for download).

My recollection is that one or two special editions had a firmware with a higher number and not an update for the plain version. Will look in the AM.

I don't think there have been any special editions with features that differed from the standard models.

How far into the K-3 product lifecycle did the special edition come out before a successor was announced? Are "Special Edition" kits now indicators of the halfway mark toward a successor?

Yes but that's not firmware

Plus it's technically just a replaceable part rather than a change to the camera itself.

I think it's reasonable to suspect that we're about halfway into the K-1's product cycle, but at the same time I wouldn't extrapolate APS-C model trends to the FF line.
