From my hazy understanding of US retailing, I'm thinking that price might exclude sales tax...is that so? If so, at current exchange rates it's roughly similar to the UK price, which already includes VAT (retail prices here must include taxes). That would be the bigger surprise though, as there's usually quite a premium on our prices vs US ones, even before tax.
You are correct, it does not include sales tax (and even that is a paltry 6-7% in most states, compared to the EU's 20%+). However, due to gaps in US laws, most people never end up paying sales tax on online purchases as it is usually not collected at the time of purchase.

Try around 10% in 12 states and it can be as high as 13%. The difference in taxing is the difference in govt benefits though (EU seem to fund more social benes). Plus there are possible state income and federal taxes due every year here in the US separately.

It is hard to compare taxing between US and EU as a result.

Where do you get your numbers? California has a State wide (base) sales tax of 7.25% which is the highest in the nation. District and Local Sales taxes might push that up to as high as 10.25% but when you buy mail order you are only responsible for the State wide and any mandatory taxes.

The statewide tax rate is 7.25%. In most areas of California, local jurisdictions have added district taxes that increase the tax owed by a seller. Those district tax rates range from 0.10% to 1.00%. Some areas may have more than one district tax in effect. Sellers are required to report and pay the applicable district taxes for their taxable sales and purchases.
Here are the average (not state wide) taxes for each state as of Jan 2017 along with rankings:

Tax is assessed at a state level and then at individual county and city levels ('local' in your link). So it might be 7% state but the county and city might tack on another 2 or 3%.

So...ignoring sales tax for a while...the price in the UK (excluding tax) will be approx 1800, which equates to $2330 at current rates. Maybe 5% different? That's essentially no difference at all compared to the usual situation.

As far as I know, for online purchases, city and county taxes do not apply (in some states at least).

That isn't correct here.. I just tried it and was charged a combined state and county tax rate. the additional city tax was not applied however. But that was only an additional .5 % as the big chunks were state and county..

In any case all this proves my point, tax rates are so complicated that comparing one country to another is not fair. There are so many individual taxes for so many different reasons.. not to get too political.. that each is an apple to an orange.
