I recently returned a Garmin Virb 360, which also recorded 4k video and 360 sound. It also did 5.6k video (which is actually 4k x 2 in the new math) but you had to stitch together with a computer.

It was well built (water proof) and generally well though out. It even stabilized the image, which was prettt awesome. But one of the 4 channels of audio was always blank so I returned it. Before returning it I did do a test ride with it. I'll share it here for reference:

I may have to try this new Theta, but I really hope that someone eventually makes a camera that utilizes a larger sensor (1/1.7 vs 1/2.3). When the Q went to the 1/1.7, image quality improved dramatically.

4k in a 360 format doesn't seem to amount to enough in my opinion. But I suppose compared to other 360 cameras it looks ok.

The first prototype, shown at Photokina and Salon de la Photo 2012, was labelled Pentax.

The second prototype, shown at CES 2013, was labelled Ricoh.

There's an article (in Japanese) about a Theta event at the Ricoh Square in Osaka on D.C. Watch. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but it looks like the presentations were similar to what was shown in the presentation in Berlin.

??????????RICOH THETA V ????????????? - ???? Watch

It's going on sale tomorrow in Japan.

From reading the Japanese article and seeing the video presentation from IFC in Berlin, I feel that the big story with the Theta is not the 4K or the spatial sound, so much as the connectivity and expandability.

- It can stream content to a TV wirelessly and you can use the Theta itself as a Nintendo Wii style controller to change the direction of view
- It connects with smartphones and directly to LAN much faster than before
- It can accept plugins by developers, and there will be a website to download these
- Ricoh has been running contests to incentivize development of Theta-related smartphone apps, so it is reasonable to expect them to do the same with the plugins for the unit itself in future

You often hear commentators asking for better connectivity and an open platform for developers. Thom Hogan in particular goes on about this a lot. In many ways Ricoh has done this better than any other Japanese maker with the Theta specifically. If they put similar technology into a more orthodox camera, I guess these commentators would notice, but Theta seems to be popular with a different crowd.

In any case, I think this is going to be huge for Ricoh. I also think they have positioned themselves well to cash in with the cool accessories they released with it. If you buy the whole lot (mic and underwater housing), it's about $1,000. It kind of reminds me of the GR series, because it has always been always a somewhat pricy camera, but if you are keen enough, you can buy all the viewfinders, adapter lenses and special cases, and it could be very expensive indeed.

There are now a total of four interviews with the designers to read. There are now two about spatial sound, one about extensions and another about the 4K resolution.

Interesting, the new firmware updates for Theta were announced on theta360, but not on ricoh-imaging:

I've had a hard time with UWA photos. Spherical distortion only has advantages in narrow conditions, beyond that I found ugly. With 360 images it's fun for 5 minutes. Past 5 minutes, I go back to the subtleties of artful DSLR image. 360 degree is hardly any subtle and artful, it's just technically bold and artistically gross.
