Metabones 0.5x Speed Booster for Pentax Q cameras

Didn't see any threads about this in the news forum or the Q forum, though this was announced a week ago. Initially available for Nikon lenses, announced plans for a K mount lens version.

Metabones Devil's Speed Booster Q666 0.50x Press Release

Still no K mount lens -> large sensor MILC though.

Can someone clarify what this adapter does? Does it reduce the crop factor of the Q by half? Why would my Q suddenly become a low light monster as the press release states?

You can think of it as a reverse teleconverter. It multiplies the focal length and f-number by 0.5x, e.g. a 100mm f/2.8 becomes an effective 50mm f/1.4.

A little late in the game, but even if I used Q I wouldn't buy based on the poor choice in naming and branding.

Not sure Y they would bother, the Q system seems "non active" from Ricohs direction even though they said(quite a while ago) that they still "support the Q".

How many will bother buying this?...It costs as much as a used body and a few lenses???

On the + side Metabones does high class stuff.

When you say "becomes an effective 50mm" do you mean that at this point it still provides slightly more reach than the 06 does??
Thinking of what is available in K-mount and what is available in Q-mount, I'm having a hard time seeing where this would be useful. Perhaps turning a 24mm or 28mm f/2.8 lens into a 12mm or 14mm f/1.4 lens or turning a 50mm f/1.4 lens into a 25mm f/0.7 lens. $400+ is a lot of money unless a solid use is there.

It means it will have the same AOV as if you put an actual (not "equivalent") 50mm lens on your camera. Crop factor still applies, so yes it would have a slightly narrower AOV than the 06 15-45mm (Q lenses are labeled with their real, not "equivalent", focal lengths).

I'm sceptical, ive been using FR/SB for a couple of years now on other systems....

Most are 0.71 reduction, so on Apsc it makes a 1.1x crop....and on M43 1.4x crop....and you gain one stop

Metabones has these reducers and the XL model that brings the crop to equal to FF..1.0...its 0.63 and you gain a stop and a third of light.

I'd rather buy the 08 for the same $$$$$....

i think itd be useful for dead of night shooting with no moon, in reality PITCH BLACK....otherwise the 01 does a great job.

Currently available: Nikon lens -> Q camera

Later on: K mount lens -> Q camera

Q lens -> DSLR focal reducer is not physically possible

So, mounting a 50mm f/1.4 lens on this adapter will give me an optic system that works like a 25mm f/0.7. Apply the Q7 crop factor of 4.7x I will have an image that is equivalent to a 117.5mm lens on FF showing a depth of field as if that 117.5mm lens was set to f/3.29?

The 06 lens could give the same equivalent field of view but even wide open at f/2.8 I would have an equivalent depth of field of f/13.16.

Hmm... I suppose if you could live with a shallow depth of field at equivalent long focal lengths or need that light gathering power then this adapter could be for you.
