Hmm... the D FA* 50mm f/1.4 is a SDM lens... the question is, what kind of SDM?

I don't think anyone has a 10-20mm zoom for full frame. I know folks use the Sigma 10-20, but they have to do some cropping to get it to work. Personally, I think the 15-30 is wide enough for normal purposes and has relatively mild distortion considering how wide it is. If you need wider, I suppose one of the Irix primes is the way to go.

Who knows? The 24-70 and 15-30 are both listed as "SDM" lenses, but clearly they have a different motor from any of the DA * lenses. Even the individual DA *lenses have different motors from each other.

Hopefully Pentax hasn't chosen an under-powered motor just to make a slightly smaller lens.

The DA Wide Angle Zoom which has been for ages on the roadmap is finally there, it has become a DA★ and you are unhappy? Bloody Pentaxians!

What ? You're thinking they took all those defective motors from the 16-50 and put them in the 50 1.4 to save money? What are you saying here?

MY understanding is SDM is a small electric motor that drives a gear, like screw drive with an internal motor. DC is a ring motor, PLM is a stepper motor. But I would also expect each SDM motor for each lens is specific to that lens. Surely they aren't one size fits all?

And yes, I called you Shirley.

DC is not a ring motor, it's a micromotor, and so are the non-Tamron SDMs -until now, that is

Yeah, me too. Come on, Pentax; give us that K-5 series firmware fix we need so badly. It's ridiculous that the downscale K-50 has it and this doesn't.

The good thing about it is that there's no huge overlap with the bottom end of the 18-whatever lenses. I'm guessing the difference between 11mm and 12mm is worth having?

Wonder what the coverage on the K-1 is going to be like...

Looks pretty awesome! I think I would have preferred 11-28mm with slower aperture, but still tempting. Now for the price & weight...

No, I think I see an aperture lever peeking out at the bottom right of both photos. You probably won't have that excuse to not buy it.

It's just another lens I can't afford to add to the list of all the other lenses I can't afford.

I have the Sigma 8-16 equivalent 12-24 on FF for my action camera, but no 12-24 for my K-1, my landscape camera. Should I be happy? Why?

SDM - just like USM - can be a micromotor or a ring-type piezo "ultrasonic" motor. The question is, which is it. Are they launching their first ring-type SDM lens?
Even if it's a micromotor, I can't imagine Pentax would forget their experience with the DA* 16-50mm and put the exact same components.

Damn, I just bought the DA 12-24. This 11-18 seems smaller, with f/2.8 to boot.

Nice one, Pentax you got my attention...! Any mention on when to expect this?

Interesting. I would have expected a Pentax-branded Tokina 12-28/4 but apparently this is a completely new lens. Good to see they’re still investing in the APS-C lens line-up.

Finally, it seems, a worthy successor to the DA12-24, and they even made it a DA*, standing by their faithful crop body users. Now that is good, exciting news.

The bad news is it may be years before I will be able to afford it ... But who knows.

Weather sealed (crop) wide angle definitely was the major piece missing from their APS-C line up. We'll have to see how it tests.
