or 11-18, 20-40, 55-300PLM - if I'd go the APSC route consequently, this would be my choice.

The PLM I own, great lens. 20-40: would have it in my bag if it'd be fullframe - nice lens I tested it, when I tested the DA12-24 against DA15, DA15 won because I loved the feel of the high quality. The 11-18 looks pretty good at first sight IMO.

Like already suggested, add also the nice and compact DA55-300mm WR RE PLM to that list.

It's the */WR property which matters 2nd most for me. Even more I like the wider FOV it should have. Not sure about 2.8 though - usually I don't use UW lenses wide open, but this might give the chance for e.g. nice clos-ups.

Ancient history, I would have thought, Astonm.

They were the very first Pentaxes that had their own focus motors, IIRC.

I've converted my 50-135 (and helped another forum member last night convert his 16-50 and 50-135) because it takes such beautiful pictures, and I even use it on cropped mode on my K-1.

This new lens seems a great complement to those zooms. I have the DA12-24 but this thing should be at another level (including price!).
*** lessee - I think its been about 3 ish years since I had to send the smaller zoom in for repairs - they replaced the SDM ( Silent Drive Motor - it IS a technology!)... which failed in roughly 6 months after the repair. Would that qualify for "ancient?" Granted, they may have been using old mfg parts to replace the bits. Not saying anyone is wrong, I just hope Pentax / Ricoh has got their act together by now.

In defense of the * zooms - everything is FANTASTIC when they were working. Love them, but there's just some days you really need that autofocus.

Good to see Pentax paying some attention to those of us without FF or medium format cameras (for the first time in quite a while), even though it's a lens that doesn't interest me in the slightest.

f/2.8 will permit a brigher viewfinder for the old guys with old eyes. .

Why does it have an AF/MF switch, do all pentax cameras not have this switch on the body? If so why is it duplicated on the lens?

Without the switch, catch in focus will not work on motorized lenses.

This lens is probably intended to replace DA12-24, but also and for sure DA14/2.8 in the existent line-up.

The presence of a large filter-shred is quite interesting for landscape shooters.

The apparent compactness for this zoom offers a direct and visible size advantage for APS-C in comparison to the D-FA 15-30/2.8 FF zoom, covering roughly (still narrower) equ. FOV.

I don't think this is going to replace the 12-24mm, which would become your more consumer-oriented option. Those who want higher-grade image quality and other pro-level features such as weather sealing, silent AF, etc. will have this premium alternative to consider.

Sure, Astonm, they were the Mk I of Pentax in-lens focus design. Changing over the motor with the same stockpiled part wouldn't change the technology.

I bought a D FA 28-105 this year and the experience is entirely different.

(Shrugs shoulders). Sounds like you should convert them. They will be faster and more reliable. Won't cost you a cent if you have a laptop and an older body to download the config file ... if you were in Melbourne, Australia, I'd come over and do it for free.

Thankfully, the DC in this lens is more reliable than screwdrive (because the QS mechanism can and does break). Too bad they haven't updated the old DA*'s to use DC.

The 12-24 isn't wasn't cheap at all...

Nice leak and pictures of that lens, but remains a very essential question: did Ricoh already inform Santa Klaus ?

It was only from the DA line, Biz, so for this one get ready for Star level prices!
