This lens is probably intended to replace DA12-24, but also and for sure DA14/2.8 in the existent line-up.

The presence of a large filter-shred is quite interesting for landscape shooters.

The apparent compactness for this zoom offers a direct and visible size advantage for APS-C in comparison to the D-FA 15-30/2.8 FF zoom, covering roughly (still narrower) equ. FOV.
11-18 can't replace 12-24...It's different lenses. Star 2.8 lens vs 12-24/4 without WR and longer focal range.

Interesting. I would have expected a Pentax-branded Tokina 12-28/4 but apparently this is a completely new lens. Good to see they’re still investing in the APS-C lens line-up.
Same here i was expecting 12-24 to disappear to have rebranded 12-28 in the line up.
I wonder how this 11-18 will compare to sigma 8-16

Additional Buttons on New Lens?

Looking at the photo on page 1 there seems to be two additional protrusions on the focus distance ring.

On the left is a protrusion that could be the gold DA * badge, but on my DA* lenses this badge is pretty flush with the surface and shows gold when viewed from this angle.

On the right side is a much larger protrusion. Any one know what this is for?

Also, the gold ring where the lens designation is "HA PENTAX-DA 1:2.8 11-18mm" seems to be rotated a bit to obscure the final letters for the lens. SDM? DC? AW?ED? (IF)?

Regards

Chris

It will be very interesting to see how this lens performs on K-1 in FF mode.
Not a chance.

Interesting, but what could it be? not stabilisation. Focus limiter?

Maybe it's a switch for the warp drive?

What surprises me the most about some of the responses in this thread is the mention of Tokina, "Tokina DNA in this lens", "Tokina rebadge", etc. This lens is cool! It looks all Pentax to me! We'll learn more soon!

Oh, and I think fsge is right, this lens removes any need for the 12-24 in the lineup. The DA 14 is gone as well. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if both of these lenses have been out of production for some amount of time and it's existing stock for sales lately. So watch the stores for clearance sales OR get ready for an awesome new wide angle zoom option in k-mount land.

I think Ricoh has drastically changed the plans for this lens. The roadmap looked more like a 12-28

Hope its not because IQ was too bad after 18mm...

A 12-28 f2.8 zoom would be really large. I'm glad this is a somewhat smaller piece of hardware, something that I might want in my own bag, instead of something that feels like you're "carting it around".

A 12-28 f4 might make more sense. Make it internally focus, and on crop that would be an awesome focal range.

And it was shown as a DA, not a DA*. Happy to get another DA* lens choice, but not what I would have expected from the lens roadmap. I would have guessed 12-28, or 12-30 f3.5-4

I'm glad that Pentax is coming out with new APSC lenses. To me this is a commitment to keep the APSC k-mount. If this will work on my k-5II, I'm considering it too.

Tokina DNA means it's setup seems similar to Tokina extreme wide angle F2.8 lenses. They all seem to have the same basic design 11-16/11-20 2.8 an 12-24 F4. The DA 12-24 is also a Tokina design made by Pentax (as opposed to the DA* 16-50 50-135 and 10-17. Which are Pentax designs licensed to Tokina.) All the Tokina AT-X pro lenses seem to be variations on the same basic design and this lens looks like that in a Pentax cladding.
Tokina | Digital Eyes - Visionary technology makes a difference you can see

It is clearly not a rebrand, Ricoh would not have given it a *designation if it were not made by them. But it could be a variation on the Tokina theme licensed from them. Maybe one Tokina decided not to use. Tokina does seem to specialize in wides, so it wouldn't be so strange to go shopping for a design over there.
