Looking at the photo on page 1 there seems to be two additional protrusions on the focus distance ring.

On the left is a protrusion that could be the gold DA * badge, but on my DA* lenses this badge is pretty flush with the surface and shows gold when viewed from this angle.

On the right side is a much larger protrusion. Any one know what this is for?

Also, the gold ring where the lens designation is "HA PENTAX-DA 1:2.8 11-18mm" seems to be rotated a bit to obscure the final letters for the lens. SDM? DC? AW?ED? (IF)?

Regards

Chris
most likely a zoom lock as some have said, I doubt a focus limiter since it's easy to go from infinity and down with most wide-angles.

and the final letters are probably just SDM [IF] (and prolly ED, but I'm not very knowledgeable on special lens elements)

Can't agree with you, it is not a FF lens but I'm expecting to be better than 10-17mm and 12-24mm in FF mode on K-1.
I tried them and both lenses are usable (without vignetting) on K-1 in FF mode, DA10-17 from 14,5mm and DA12-24 from 18mm.
In compare to them I am expecting that DA11-18 will be usable in FF mode from 14-15mm and with much better sharpness at the edges, also with less distortions and CAs.

p.s. For me DFA 15-30 is not an option, it is simply too big and too heavy, so usability of DA11-18 in FF mode on K-1 is very important to me.

You are confusing expectation with fanciful hope. It's a crop lens - expect nothing more.

If the DFA15-30 is not an option for you, this will be a great alternative on the smaller format.

When you can get a 24mp crop out of 11 mm then it would still be a great FOV.

From some rough scaling from the images, the filter thread looks about 86mm. That would be prohibitive for me....

FWIW, the Tokina 11-20mm F/2.8 has 82mm thread, so that's what I would expect - note that I'm not suggesting the Pentax lens is related to the Tokina, but it's similar in range and aperture, so I would think it reasonable that they can make it with similar filter thread. 77mm would be really awesome for me, but I doubt that will be the case...

I don't understand peoples negativity aboot this lens.

11-16. f 2.8. star lens, for APS-C. its a grail. and all the people, saying its not FF for their K-1, ummmm, the 15-30 f2.8 came out yonks ago.....????? FF , high quality lens, equals $$$$$$, exactly the same as Nikon and Canon, but cheaper.

and people saying Pentax Ricoh has no direction, ????

FF K-1.... 15-30, 24-70, 70-200, all 2.8, and 150-450

APS-C Now 11-16, 16-50, 50-135 again all 2.8 Star lenses, That are the field of view equivalents of their FF brothers and the ability to use the 150-450; and the 10-17 fisheye, 200mm /f2.8. 300mm/f4.

They just popped out the KP. K-70.

An APS-C flagship model to replace the K-3ii .....will come. I bet you 0ne million dollars..

A K-1 ii or similar , will come, I bet you two million dollars. I 'm not starting anything, but that dream of a D-LX , well, just seems inevitable.

Ricoh Pentax, are doing things, in both formats. and are producing high quality optics for both, in all focal ranges your average photographer is shooting,

And filter sizing, check Nikon and canon offerings, 82mm , or , no front filter....I think we are fooling ourselves here that Pentax is behind the curve.

It's hard to know what they'll do next, but I agree, this piles in quite nicely to the existing lens lineup. What might make sense is a real overhaul of the DA*16-50. A problem here might be the continued existence of the Tamron and Sigma 17-50's as they both seem nicer and much much better value. But that's somewhere down the road.

I was looking for a high quality [U]WA to upgrade my Sigma 10-20, and undecided between the 15 and 12-24, looks like I found it.
Why would this need a zoom lock?! Doesn't seem to be as heavy as a 150-450...But Macro would be nice...

[] Well, I guess this means no K3 replacement, as everybody knows pentaxians are a bunch of cheapstakes that only want backwards compatibility to buy cheap lenses. [where's the End Sarcasm button?]

I was hoping that someone will release wide angle primes for K mount compact in size and weight, as example like new 15mm Voightlander (65mm length, 250g weight) but that obviously won't happened.
Irix which is not even close with its IQ is 110mm and 600g which is ridiculous. I don't give a fuc* for its fast apperture because my camera is mostly on tripod while shooting wide angle landscapes.
I am using Pentax for decades, waited long time for K-1, using it for 16months and made 0 really good landscapes ("money shots") because of inadequate wide angle lenses.
Old Pentax lenses wider than 24mm are hard to find and ones that I already have are not good enough. I also tried new Irix and Samyang/Rokinon lenses from 14 to 20mm but their IQ on K-1 is below average.
Despite the much lower resolution I had better landscape shots with K-5 + DA 12-24mm combo and that is frustrating.
On K-1 I had best results in landscaping with Pentax A 28mm f/2, very good IQ especially in pixel shift mode, but that lens is simply not wide enough for serious landscaping.
Cmon Ricoh, is it so hard to made one compact (limited) FF wide angle prime?
Yes, I will wait for a new crop body, if it will be a good combo with DA11-18 I will probably sell my K-1 because it is not usable for what it is primarily made - landscaping. At least for me.
Sorry Ricoh, but I'm not reach enough to have a chopper or caddy to take care of my D-FA lenses.

You'll have to wait for that.
But for wide landscapes on the K-1,
how about a Zeiss ZK 18/3.5, or one of their newer M42 or Leitaxed ZF2 super-wides?

Does this mean we get a reprieve from the "Pentax never announces anything" complaints for a couple days?

I think once people get used to saying things like that it's addictive. At some point the facts don't matter anymore, it's all about their internal monologue.
