Ricoh to enter the space race?

Not exactly... but they are presenting a Theta derived camera module for robots at JAXA.

Makes a lot of sense, actually! Very cool.

I think to use it for robots makes sense.

Note this is Ricoh, not Ricoh Imaging.

Love that Ricoh is developing new technology and using it in other fields. Ricoh has lots of patents. Glad they are bringing some of them to market.
Thanks,

How will the robots be able to see and move around with the lousy Pentax autofocus?

They'll certainly run into anyone on a bicycle.

...and to exit the still camera business? (based upon the desperate lack of new product announcement these days)

WTF? They just announced the DA 11-18, the DFA 50/1.4 is slated for sale soon, 85/1.4 is in development, and the KP came out earlier this year.

And Pentax has TWO cameras in the top 10 on DXOMark despite them being releases from a few years back. The K-1 is remarkably competitive -- it's the least expensive of all of the top 20 performing cameras.

Cameras are not like iPhones that need to be replaced on a yearly basis with a new model.

He doesn't refer to Pentax, he refers to Nikon, who had 8 fewer bodies out this year compared to last year.

Aside. So in 2017 Nikon introduced three cameras: D7500, D850, and Coolpix W300. Three cameras. This is down from 11 in 2016, 16 in 2015, 18 in 2014, 21 in 2013, and 22 in 2012. Oh wait, I'm forgetting KeyMission in 2016, and the phantom DLs from the same year. Or were those figments of my imagination?
Needless to say, Nikon's been scaling back. In 2017, they basically stopped. Hard to grow when you're shrinking ;~).

If this means something, it is that mirror cameras will soon be items from he past, at least for most people. Frankly, you have to be very brave to carry around a brick of over one kg when you can have a close enough IQ for half less in weight. The K5IIS will be my last SLR.
