If I got a "Silver KP" with the smallest grip, it would look and handle more like the two film Pentaxes I started off with {and are the cause of my affection for Pentax} than like anything else.
A silver KP may just be what you need then!

"Silver KP" has been on my 'purchase soon' list for several months now {mostly looking forward to Black Friday or Cyber Monday} - but I'm so uncertain after the last month or so of talk that I'll probably just continue to use my K-30 for awhile since it continues to work for n-1 photos {first exposure each day lost to Dark Image Syndrome}

N-1! I like it.

Well, hold out and hope for 2019 seems to be the order of the day.

I am a technical sort, after all - Math is often described as 'the language of science', and often it provides the best way for me to convey a concept succinctly.
In this case, since end of May, Dark Image Syndrome has been an issue for the first exposure of the day, and everything is normal after that.

With my collection of manual lenses, I have no reason to freak out at this point - I can afford to be patient, and I don't want to purchase something this month when events of the next year might cause me to regret the decision, so I will live normally and maybe by next year at this point I either purchase a KP or a new 'first choice'.

That sounds like an altogether sensible idea.

Can't go wrong with that. You'll possibly get a very amazing APS-C flagship camera next year or get the KP even cheaper than it is now sometime in 2019.

Or if push came to shove, you could always go for a different camera from a different manufacturer sometime next year & adapt your lenses to it.

OK.I'll rephrase that. With current technology, it's not really possible to make it smaller. Of course, I'd really prefer they don't make it smaller!
Smaller or bigger isnt really an issue, but they should make it lighter...

Just to put some skin in the game, what would you, personally, be prepared to see changed or sacrificed to make it lighter?

Dunno... but FF Nikon d750 managed to be lighter than K-3II by 50g. Maybe switch to some lighter materials?

That would mean more plastic and less metal. So no, I don't want it lighter either! It only weighs a little more than the K-5 / K-3.

Not really. There are a lot of new material that are lighter than standard plastic/metal used...
And why not try to cut weight. Why do people even want a new version of a camera if they dont want things to be improved.
For example Nikon's d7xxx line lost weight during last few iterations same pattern with Canon's 60-70-80d, and Pentax top of the line crop gained weight.

I worked once with a guy who was a part of Project Apollo - he talked about the things they did to strengthen the space capsule while simultaneously lightening it. Weight should not be a goal. There is no virtue to carrying future scrap metal around. That is why modern vehicles are made of "space age materials".
