What can be said with certainty is that mirrorless cameras are more popular (in comparison to DSLRs) in Japan and Asia than in the rest of the world.

Let's have a look at the CIPA figures for the first nine months of 2018, more precisely at the shipments to Japan, those to Asia and those to the rest of the world:

http://www.cipa.jp/stats/documents/e/d-201809_e.pdf

Let's calculate the DSLR/mirrorless ratio for these three regions, on the basis of both the number of units shipped and the corresponding JPY figures.

DSLR/mirrorless ratio, number of units shipped, January - September 2018
  • Japan: 0,86x
  • Asia: 1.48x
  • World except Asia: 1.87x

DSLR/mirrorless ratio, JPY figures, January - September 2018
  • Japan: 0,80x
  • Asia: 1.42x
  • World except Asia: 1.15x

As far as the world outside Asia is concerned, note the discrepancy between the ratio based on units and the ratio based on JPY. DSLRs are more popular there in comparison to mirrorless cameras but, on average, much cheaper too (and, on average, much cheaper than the DSLRs sold in Asia). The product mix is definitely different from one region to another.

Average mirrorless camera price:
  • Japan: 56,457
  • Asia: 58,313
  • World except Asia: 64,233

Average DSLR price:
  • Japan: 52,750
  • Asia: 56,179
  • World except Asia: 39,522

To make a long story short: if DSLR cameras are so popular outside Asia, it's because Canon and Nikon sell tons of entry-level models to Westerners.

Pentax hasn't shown yet what they're going to do with their hybrid viewfinder.
they're going to innovate in the crowded market, as they did with their sensor stabilization, or their pixel shift... then in a year or two, everyone else will suddenly need hybrid 3 million pixel evf...

I don't understand the comment. The DFA are FF, no? So it means they are bigger & more expensive. One of the advantages of apsc is overall smaller size & cheaper. I know i can, but why would i put a bigger & more expensive FF lens on my k3 (or sequel)?
Because, they are great lenses?

This is changing very fast. Canon is the big shot in those numbers and now has trouble of moving those cheap dslr kits with one or two lenses. Six months from now the shift towards mirrorless will be made overhere also.

Nice. Let's not forget that the Japanese market is less than 10% of the total.
And we had no significant DSLR announcement this year. Last year, DSLRs were sold (technically, shipped) in larger numbers in Japan, too.

Then we might want to realize this isn't about which technology is "winning" the market share "fight"; but what works best for us. MILC fanboys never care about that; they want any "competitor" killed with no regard of the consequences.

After 2,451 posts, and considering we're not breaking any new ground here, I've closed the thread.

As and when we see some movement on a new Pentax APS-C model - whatever it might look like - we can pick up our discussions once more
