Any push to full frame would mean $1000s in new lenses or a retreat to old manual glass that won't give me the results I currently get from the K-3II.
The idea of the 24mpx mid range full frame market has been a void for quite some time. With recent flops by Nikon and Canon mirrorless and no D750 replacement Sony had almost no resistance against its A73. As much as i dislike Sony you have to admit they didn't miss the mark. All be it any one not noticing that particular void in the camera market would have to be blind or ignorant.

I wouldn't be against a 24mpx full frame mid range Pentax dslr

However a true multipurpose aps-c dslr such as a K-3ii successor is sorely needed.

The X-T3 is very tempting indeed.

I'm not sure whether MILC or FF "K-3 replacement" is more divisive here.

Is the AF having trouble finding focus, or is it focusing on the wrong thing?
Usually, when I'm having trouble focusing on something still, the issue is that the camera is focusing on the branch rather than on the animal.
I have probably dozens of pictures of my kids playing soccer where the focus locked on the goal, the trees behind the field, the mostly static parents sitting behind the players in motion, etc.

So the camera locked onto the wrong "subject"?

Yes. The camera couldn't successfully differentiate between the moving subjects the camera was pointed at, and the static stuff in the background. Over the past year or two I've improved my technique and my keeper rate, but I still get more than a few like I described.

I can’t see why Ricoh would go to the trouble of developing a new lens like the delayed DA* 11-18 if they weren’t planning a new flagship APS-c to put it on. Anybody who has a good rationale, please enlighten!

Since the DA 11-18mm f/2.8 seems to be very much astrophotography and landscape photography oriented, what would be the shortcomings of a KP + DA 11-18mm combo compared to a new APS-C flagship + DA 11-18mm combo?

Well several things: 1. Many things are developed, yet not put into production - for example Nikon's three camera compact DL line that was completely ready, but died on the way to the production line. 2. Pent-up demand, since the 12-24mm is about twelve years old! 3. Will the 11-18mm ever see the light of day at all? Cannot remember reading about any other camera brand having lens QC issues, letting months go by, and still not announcing any further news about availability? 4. Suspicious behavior around aps-c cameras and lenses in general; discontinuing your entry and flagship model with no news on the horizon for replacements. If I was a manufacturer in these competitive times - with all sorts of new cameras and lenses being announced and put in production by my competitors - I would certainly want to let my fan base know about my future products, and extend a olive branch to them...(beyond saying something about something at a trade show half a year ago!).

I'd keep a close eye on the lens roadmap to make sure it doesn't silently disappear.

The first point to consider for any K3ii replacement must surely be how much you would be willing to pay for one. When I bought my K3 in Sept 2015 it was about £700 new and the K3ii £850. The biggest shock with the KP was its initial price of around £1250, although it has come down a bit since then. However tempting one might find the D500 or new XT3, they are quite a bit more expensive than the K3 and K3ii. The virtues of the K5 and K3 range are great IQ, good build quality, great handling and user interface at a very competitive price. The newer cameras may well have impressive specifications, but they come at a substantial cost, and those improved specifications over the K3 range are at the margins of most peoples needs. If you are a pro, it may well be worth the extra money but for most of us spending the difference on a photography course, better lenses or going to more interesting places would be more beneficial.
I am not saying I do not want to see a K3ii replacement - one would be nice, perhaps with the KPs sensor and processing powers for enhanced low light performance, but if I can't afford to buy one due to prohibitive cost what would be the point? Pentax should be careful in this regard. Nikon's upgrade to the D7200 , the D7500 is £400 more expensive yet loses some of the more useful functionality and specifications of it's predecessor and by many accounts is not as well built

They arent flops, they dont quite reach the standard that $$$ony has set with the A7iii.However,with some firmware tweaks they will improve.

The CaNiks will sell extremely well espescially once the tweaks come.Panasonic will bring a better "first FF M/L" to market than anyone.
