While Photokina 2018 would be a good moment for a major announcement, IMO it's too early for a genuine leak. We should know for sure by... April, perhaps?
For now, i'm classifying this rumor as "guessing".

Hardly a rumour : they say maybe it will be announce, maybe it will have new Cpu and Af module. I could do say such things for any camera line up today !

IMO they’re at the point where they have to start from scratch on AF (new AF module, by which they mean sensor and perhaps dedicated processor). A new CPU indicates a complete rethink on the processing logic, which throws open every system in the camera. Inductively, that would explain the delay but it makes me uncomfortable. I’m accustomed to Pentax logic.

That's the pickle we find ourselves in, for sure. We'd love to see "leaps and bounds" improvements in some areas, yet we don't want to risk the solid platform we've come to rely on, limitations and all.

As for the rumour... I'm torn between thinking it's a genuine rumour versus a poke in the ribs to let Ricoh know they really need to have the K-3II replacement ready some time next year...

K-3 iii ? Did they run out of numbers? It just screams nothing new here when you can't even come up with a name.

The rumour mill is simply calling the new model "K-3III" to signify that it's the K-3II replacement. Ricoh hasn't made an announcement of any sort yet, but we have to call it something until it arrives Assuming the rumour is true (and that's a big assumption), they've plenty of time to come up with a suitable model designation

I'm hopeful the new model will combine both (M)irrorless (A)nd (R)eflex (T)echnology. They will name it the "K-MART"...

I say we call it K-3II mkII. The second version of the second version of the K-3.

They did indeed run out of numbers. The K-7/K-5/K-3 sequence was cut short by the fullframe K-1. The K-1 is itself a dead end.
K-1ii, (K-1 'two', K-1 'too'), sounds like a regression.

Once again I purpose that Ricoh, et al, get away from sequential numbering and simply give each product line a name. Distinctions between
model versions can simply be made by the year the product was released. Thus, the top of the line APS-C line could be named 'Alice'.
The entry level named 'Tom'. The full frame named 'Hector'. Etc. Rather than comparing a K-5ii vs a K-3ii, you would simply compare the
2012 Alice vs the 2015 Alice.

It works for cars, (among other things); why not cameras?
