KP ranks #5 in Digicame Watch Award 2017.

Pentax KP was voted #5 in デジカメ Watch アワード 2017 (Digicame Watch Award 2017).
https://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/special/dcaward/1098844.html

This is based on an online poll conducted by Digicame Watch in Japan where each reader could name up to 5 ILC as the camera(s) of the year. Apparently 4397 people cast their votes.

Top 5 runners are D850, alpha 7R III, alpha 9, GFX 50S, and KP.

KP is the only camera in top 5 that is NOT a spec monster one way or the other, it won't win anything in the catalog spec department. Yet KP got 966 points, almost half of D850's 1979 points!

KP's 966 points also means that more than 1 in 5 of 4397 readers named KP as one of their choices (966/4397 ~ 22/100 > 1/5).

KP is also the highest ranking APS-C camera. Competitors in a similar market segment (I guess) did poorly, X-T20 got 348 points, D7500 got 333.

First of all, it is only bad because the K-70 has such great value and Jordan doesn't like the grips (he's a video guy anyway, so who cares) Second , was not named the worst, but second worst.

All such news are vanity of vanities. Worst or best are the same

People who know what they're talking about will see the KP as a very good APS-C camera. Those who are obsessed with the latest and greatest specs will obviously not see how refined the KP actually is. Sure, it may lack a few of the top professional features that the K-3 has, but it's got 99% of the features that the average Joe-tographer wants in their camera. If it makes a newbie feel like a pro, it's doing its job.

Probably it's a combination of a bit of both.

About 1000 people voting for KP, they certainly look active. I don't know if Japanese Pentaxians are more active than, say, Japanese Canon users, but it's plausible.

Is KP a success? Don't know, but it can't be a total flop judging from 2017/12/20-26 ILC sales ranking at kakaku.com (KP is #14 though we cannot know exactly how this ranking is calculated).

The problem with KP is that it's arrival was not comminucated properly. Many of fellow readers and forum members stated that KP is a successor of a K-3 line, but it's not. This confusion as well as lack of serious marketing, explaining the target base of this product lead to such media response as in TCSTV.

The guys from TCSTV have their own opinion. I don't know if they're right. However, my observation is Pentax has little or no promotion at all. Probably the Japanese don't care about the global market. The K-70 is such a great camera and the KP has made leaps and bounds when it comes to image quality. Nobody looks at Pentax as sellers would normally recommend Canon or Nikon. It seems that there are only a few besides Pentaxians who know about Pentax cameras. Sad, I hope Ricoh will do something about this.

The problem with the K-P was a combination of its launch price (close to 1000 dollars?) and its specifications (adequate but not top end). Launch it at 800 or 850 and it looks like a better deal. Certainly versus a camera like the D5600, it has better specs, better image quality and a significantly better viewfinder. But people compare it to the K3 II, which is still a really good deal or the K70, which is also a really good deal and say "Why is the K-P so expensive?"

But of course, the K-P is newer than either of those cameras and had a higher release price and in a way, it splits the difference between those cameras, combining some of the features of the K3 II (more auto focus points, faster frame rate) with the image quality of the K70, with a nice body build. It is understandable if not everyone connects with it, but that doesn't make it a bad camera.

I agree. The entry price point was quite expensive. I can only speculate about how they priced it. Probably the production cost of this camera is quite high and, they projected lower sales volume than usual. So maybe they placed a higher mark up to recover their cost plus a good profit margin.

I still believe that Ricoh should put some budget on marketing Pentax. I don't know how but, they have to be creative to make things catchy when they do it.

Hm. So you think a negative 1 person opinion holds any meaning compared to the weight of 966 persons' positive opinion about the K-P?
That is "alternative facts" in pure form.
