Dual (and triple) focal lenses are typical of Leica M.
They did this a number of times back then.
Yeah, exactly what came into my mind when thinking about multiple fixed FL in one lens.
Like the Tri-Elmar 16-18-21mm f/4.

Thank you. That Leica is the kind of thing I’m talking about. It doesn’t seem to have many elements, and it’s a full frame lens. If Ricoh could make an APS-C coverage collapsible version of this and fit it in a smallish body, it would be a unique and great compact.

Most likely scenario is a new fixed prime I guess. Probably the 24mm f2 that was patented a while back.

Would this be the first "curved" sensor camera?

The first Curved Sensor

Will not be in a Ricoh product. Unless they will get the sensor from Microsoft.

How is the curved sensor used in products? I am not aware that Microsoft makes many camera products except for computer cams.

About the curved sensor or about the full frame?

A curved sensor can be used just like a non-curved sensor but it requires special lenses built to focus images at that curvature.

As the article notes, it's easier to create compact, very high quality, large aperture lenses for a curved sensor than for a flat sensor because the simplest designs for lenses tend to have a curved plane of focus.

What the article did not say is that each focal length of lens has a different best curvature so the concept is less suited to interchangeable lens cameras.

Thus curved sensors are most likely to see use in fixed-lens cameras such as smartphones or maybe the Ricoh GR.

Or a reliance on in-built software to compensate for the compromises the designers needed to make. As seen in many a compact camera with fine Zeiss optics squished into compact bodies (eg the RX-100).

That's why the rumor kinda makes sense.
Is it actually true? I guess we'll have to wait and see...

That's a great point and a strike against the curved sensor. Proponents of a curved sensor say it simplifies the lens. And that's quite true. But given today's lens design abilities, materials, manufacturing, and software control, a complex ultra-corrected lens isn't a problem. Perhaps a curved sensor is a solution to a non-problem.

A complex ultra-corrected lens is not a problem to design, but it's big and heavy, if the latest 50mm offerings from Zeiss, Sigma and now Pentax are an indication.
So a curved sensor makes a lot of sense for single lens cameras designed with portability and convenience in mind.
No compromises on size and weight, no compromises on IQ.
