Name change for Japanese Ricoh/Pentax Twitter & Facebook pages

Today the Twitter and Facebook accounts of Ricoh Imaging Japan changed to "Pentax (Pentax by Ricoh Imaging)"

?????? (PENTAX by RICOH IMAGING) (@ricohimaging_jp) on Twitter
?????? (PENTAX by RICOH IMAGING) - Home | Facebook

The explanation is given as follows:

「リコーイメージング」アカウントとして運営してきた当アカウントですが、PENTAX時代からのファンの皆さまを中心にご支持をいただいている実情をふまえ、『ペンタックス(PENTAX by RICOH IMAGING)』に名前を改めて再始動します。引き続きよろしくお願いします!

Google translated: Although this account has been managed as a "Ricoh Imaging" account, we will restart the name again to "PENTAX by RICOH IMAGING" based on the fact that we are receiving support from fans from the PENTAX era I will. Thank you, continue!

I'm not going speculate as to what this means, but it is certainly an interesting development.

The Facebook page has quite a long post introducing new contributors to the page. They are different Ricoh Imaging employees, and they are explaining their photographic interests. I think what is happening is a kind of "reboot" of the social network presence to make it more interesting. At the end, they also make a point of mentioning that they will still be providing information on the Ricoh GR in future, but Theta is not mentioned specifically.

There is no change to the official name of the company. The official website is unchanged today, without any kind of announcement. It's just Facebook and Twitter.

Cool stuff, potentially.

Hasn’t Ricoh moved the Theta as a product away from Ricoh Imaging?

If nothing else, it shows that they are aware of value in the Pentax brand name - when they first took over there were worries about the name being lost, but this is a reinforcement.

Everything about Theta looks like it was always from another part of Ricoh and not something RI developed. The products announcements actually said this from the beginning "Developed and manufactured by Ricoh, the device will be marketed by subsidiary Ricoh Imaging Company, Ltd. through its French, German, UK and US online-exclusive sales channels starting October." News | RICOH THETA

Also the firmware updates are on a separate site, and they seem to have a completely different approach to working with developers that RI.

Actually, it makes sense for Theta not to be on these page, because it has a separate Facebook and Twitter. Theta users would probably be bored by the traditional photography content and vice versa.

Maybe this is a sign that Ricoh/Pentax is actually entering the twenty-first century in terms of their marketing efforts. Hey, it could happen ...

This is a prelude to the sale of the Pentax business by Ricoh (the whole 'traditional' photography business actually, including the GR) .

Ah, perfect! First a positive look, maybe this shows that Pentax has value, has brand recognition in the market, that its marketing team will finally improve, a sign that the sales of 645Z and K-1 were so good Ricoh has decided to give Pentax more power.... OR Pentax is doooooomed!

These accounts have always been Pentax and Ricoh accounts, with the majority of posts about Pentax. This is simply a more accurate name for these channels. But you can read in it whatever you want of course.

as I've said before, what I'd really like to see is Ricoh buying Hoya, putting Pentax back together, then flogging off rest of Hoya. Unfortunately their photocopier cash cow is looking a bit lean, so I don't see it happening just now

That was my first thought. But who would buy it? Maybe PF could do a Kickstarter.
