They would still get all the money, regardless if it's more effective or not
The problem is, outsourcing what should be your area of expertise is a slippery slope - once or twice it's fine, but do it too much, too often and you'll lose the ability to make your own designs, less alone improving it. The D FA* 50mm f/1.4 is a good example: they have to work hard at raising their own standards, and that is because it's their first lens made at such standards (or second, if we can count the D FA* 70-200). They had to develop their own ring-type SDM motor, which is something everybody else had for ages. There's hope that ring-type SDM would make its way into more and more lenses, especially if the diameters can be matched. How about a D FA* 300mm f/4
with fast AF?
But what if - what an outrageous idea, never before seen on this forum! - they decided instead to rebadge Sigmas? None of it would happen. We'd only get more expensive Sigmas... I can't speak for others, but that's not why I'm a Pentaxian!
