Maybe RI though there would be a huge demand for the KP ( having the small form and retro color) hence the initial pricing. What they should have done was just to stay with two models: a high end and a bang for the buck model.

No K-3's replacement this year...Rather strange info from Asahi man.
K-3II will be 3 years old from the date of sale - May, 28, 2015.
KP is not replacement of K-3II and KP is already 1 year old (26/01/2017).
It's rather silly not to offer to the users new top APS-C camera this year.

New FF camera will be at least 2000 USD. Which camera to buy for 1000 USD of K-3's level?

It is hard for me to argue since you have access to secret board meetings whereas I don't.

I would say that generally speaking, Pentax needs to have some camera in the 500-600 dollar range in order to feed the upper end cameras. If you tell me that they actually lost money on the K-70s then I suppose it would be reasonable to drop that line, but even if they made 10 dollars a camera, it is still probably worth it so that are new entry level photographers entering the Pentax brand. Otherwise, what is the point of having lenses like the 18-55/55-200/18-135 in the lens line up?

Hard to say since, with these data (7fps x 42Mp) and a 24 Mp reflex camera, the mirror and shutter will be the limiting factors, not the electronics.
