How on earth does that make sense? A rebadge of the Tamron 70-210 would not be a 70-200.
A 70-210mm is very unlikely to be exactly that. It will be a few mm out most probably, so altering the designation would be no problem. Say it is actually 205mm. A conservative company would round down whereas sales hounds would round up. Alternatively, the roadmap is only a general guide and the eventual article will be at 210mm. Or, of course, the lens won't be a rebadge of that Tamron at all.

There are rumours about rebadges all the time, but it has been quite a while since Pentax worked with another company like that. Lots of people jump up every time Tamron or Tokina or Pentax announces another high end lens, about how it will be rebadged, but it never seems to happen anymore.

Fair points.

Holy crap, 70-200 f/4?! That's a lens I've wanted for Pentax forever now. I'm officially excited.

The advantage of working with Tokina is that you can change a bit more about the lens design. Pentax could really improve on the current Tokina lens or they could make an F4 version of the 70-200 F2.8 and share that with Tokina.
Not buying any of that. No reason to add engineering time to an existing product you have to buy from someone else. And I'm not sure what advantages there would be to trying to convert their existing large/heavy/expensive 70-200 f2.8 * lens into a non-* f4 lens. The goal should be to reduce cost/weight/complexity if possible without undue damage to image quality which is going to be easier if done through developing a new product.

This is all silly conjecture anyway. I'm happy, overall, with the news that we've been handed over the last couple of days. I've no interest in any of the lenses announced; I'm happy to see Ricoh is slowly getting products to market.

I noticed this little tidbit in the 11-18 description, in the PF page Pentax DA★ 11-18mm and D FA★ 50mm Specifications (Pentax DA? 11-18mm and D FA? 50mm Specifications - Pentax Announcements | PentaxForums.com):

"This lens was developed as a "new-generation star lens", which drastically reviewed internal standards in order to respond to future camera performance improvements"...

3 things missing: lens price, future camera launch date, and future camera specs.

I think it was kind of silly for them to put that line in there but I think we're still seeing a lot of development in digital cameras. It's almost assumed that cameras are going to continue to get better with time and this lens should be able to keep up.

kenspo is probably watching this thread, snickering.

I'm trying to think of silly statements from Pentax/Ricoh Imaging, but other than some nuances lost in translation, I'm stuck. I would use cautious instead of silly and acknowledge that for a little fringe manufacturer of cameras, Pentax is surprisingly innovative, eschewing the spec race for truly useful enhancements. There is very little "me too" about Pentax and no changes in direction; official statements can be taken to the bank, but you might have to wait longer than you wanted to make a withdrawal.

Cautious would have been to write nothing of the sort. They could brag about this lens, along with the rest of their lens lineup, when the K-3 II replacement shows up. "Lenses as excellent as our recently released DA* 11-18 are only made better by our newest camera body" or some such thing. Not "It'll work for a long time" or "future lenses should work well on it, too".

Im not. This lense means that the 85 is even more delayed. Does not make me happy!

That's a good point; no mention of the new 85 that's being developed. Instead, this 70-200 f4 zoom. Who is the K-1 for again? The II version should be a wedding photog's dream body, right? I guess the FA 77 and old copies of lenses like the Sigma 85 EX will have to suffice, or go to another system...

People are getting quite silly trying to find silly interpretations on Pentax/Ricoh Imaging's statements.

Besides... don't you think that aggressively nitpicking on everything encourages them to stop communicating? We're their enemies... and ours.

By the way, they're confirming what I've said so many times: this lens is not made for the KP.

Except this is not a vague red bar lens with approximate details. This is a lens with a specifically named focal range and aperture. In the past they have not done that until those numbers were firm.

Be sure that I will make them stuff the 70-200 a place where the sun doesn't shine!

I like the idea of a 70-200/4. If your opinion is any more valid than mine or anyone elses then we have a problem.
