I like the idea of a 70-200/4. If your opinion is any more valid than mine or anyone elses then we have a problem.
My job is to attract new pro users to the Pentax system. Hard enough as it is already. Wont be any easier when I have to say "Sorry, we dont have a 85 1.4, but we can offer a 70-200 F/4"....you can guess the result..

Fair point!

Ricoh really don't do the advertising to attract the big guns either. A lot I've heard about Pentax has been through direct contacts and NOT positive image or advertising.

Pro's are only a small percentage of Pentax users. Frankly I think Pentax can forget competing on the professional market against Canon Nikon and Sony. Enthusiasts are the Pentax users, and a lot of them just cannot afford pro grade glass.

I'm afraid I'm turning into one of the naysayers. I'm trying to keep a positive attitude but I can't take photos with a "road map" and all this B.S. is driving me crazy. I guess I have to avoid Pentax News and Rumors for a while or else, after 25 years with Pentax, I might turn into a Sony user.

Since they already see me as a loose canon, I will make sure they'll receive my opinion!

A good quality 70-200 f/4 is for trekking landscapers, which is in keeping with the 'field camera' idea - but it needs to be good - ideally with a slower fixed aperture WA zoom as well.

Updating k1 2 lenses are coming and 2 are added. It is a big surprise. Waiting for da 11-18mm and dfa 70-200 .
Thanks Ricoh.

Well I consider myself as a trekking landscaper, still a 70-200 f/4 (or f/whatever) doesn't appeal me at all. A matter of shooting style, I guess ^^
I'd be interested to have the opinion of the people wanting to buy that lens: what will you use it for?

I was hoping a mock up of the 85 would be on display at CP+, but instead is slated for some time in the next 20 months. Seems like a good reason to be annoyed.

I think it was kind of silly for them to put that line in there but I think we're still seeing a lot of development in digital cameras. It's almost assumed that cameras are going to continue to get better with time and this lens should be able to keep up.

kenspo is probably watching this thread, snickering.
Go read the new production commentary about K-1ll on the K-1 Special Site. These guys are excited, they’re thinking ahead, and they know what they’re doing.

Be of Good Cheer*, Pentaxians.
Ricoh has a Plan, and you will be Happy!

monochrome comes back from the dead and the first thing he does, that I know of, is to quote me? Today is going to be interesting, this is proof.

i you want a larger pro user base, anything less than da/dfa* lenses seem like a waste of time... no one is switching brands over budget zooms. hey, maybe they'll sell a bunch of them... or maybe they'll surprise everyone with non-roadmapped lens announcements. a wide angle * and a 200mm* macro would make waiting for the 85 easier

Which is why the K1ii does ISO 800,000. 😀

I’m glad for the 70-200, as I think it may be an intriguing option for APS shooters with potential to upgrade as well as the hikers.

I guess I’m a bit baffled at the thought it would have pulled many resources from the 85. I wonder if its lateness is a function of something else...

I can see why the 85mm might be slower to production when you see what users have said about the FA* 85 1.4. When you have reputations for amazing images and pro users who would fight a bear to protect their copies, the expectations for a new lens are going to be flat out cosmic! Not stratospheric high expectations, but out of this world expectations. I suspect for the price they are going to ask for it, it had better be as close to perfect as Pentax can make it.
