I'd guess the lower priority of the 85 is almost entirely due to the the 77. Not that Pentax product dev worries too much about a user forum like this, but the 77 was voted the top Pentax lens ever. And certainly many non-Pentax photographers that I know are aware of the high quality reputation of the Limited lenses. With such a good lens already in existence, a replacement wouldn't be at the top of my list to work on.

Be careful with such a broad statement.......the new lenses bring more than AF, at least for me WR/AW is just as important. That's something that most manual lenses don't offer, my Irix 15mm & 11mm at least do. It really comes down to what your needs are. Your statement was very condescending !!

f/4 isn't fast enough for places where the sun doesn't shine.

I agree on the need for Pro lenses, and yet... I will never buy the *85/1.4, but would be interested in the 70-200/4.

This is pure speculation, but I doubt it was an either-or decision between the 70-200/4 and the *85/1.4 - more like the *85 needed time or resources that only became available once the *50 was done. Maybe the "Surprise! It's a consumer zoom!" team got the 70-200 project. (The tell-tale will be if it it's collapsible. )

If they want take their sweet time developing Otus like lenses that’s one thing, but in the meantime they should update the FA limiteds, or get tamron to redo a HD version of their f1.8 primes.
They have a really great body, but the modernness of their lenses is really holding them back in the eyes of other brand photographers. Maybe they are teaming up with Tokina and we will see something positive on this front today.

Well, you may be right, but if you remember the delay in the release of the D FA 70-200/2.8, it may be that the 85 is being delayed for similar reasons. It is, of course, a much less complicated lens design, but it is a * lens, and the expectations for it are very high. If you release a lens like this which exhibits (for example) something like focus shift (which the Zeiss 85 has – I know it isn't an AF lens, and you can possibly build in compensation to an AF system) then it is going to cause problems and take the shine off the lens, at least.

I’d love for them to reissue the 3 FA limiteds with updated digital features.

There are some serious deals on the K-1 around here now. If there was a slow and sharp across the frame wide angle prime available I would have considered it but with the pace of lens releases and the apparent focus on zooms it's a lot easier to hold back. My bank account is pleased.

A little speculation.
When Pentax came out with K1 and 5 zoom lenses, they were expecting sales.
Sales went well, and for 1 1/2 years ago, they probably decided on more lenses.
Lenses take time to develop, so 2019 will hopefully be a year of lenses.
Many K1 owners are amateurs and many would buy DFA28-105, DFA70-200/4 probably belongs to the same style, small, WR and sharp.
A replacement for F 70-210 for travels and walks.
It seems awaited, I'll consider it as well.
I hope the DFA 50 will be included when the tests of K1II take place.
We lack wide-angle lenses, maybe Penax thinks there is manual focus lens from Samyang, so it's not so hurrying. I can consider a larger DA21 limited.
For landscap, K1II is perfect, but for example weddings, I think a faster K1S is needed.
If a K1S comes, it may be associated with DFA85 being delayed.
I'm hoping for a new roadmap for 645 at CP+ http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/japan/products/lens/images/645_Mount_Lens.pdf

Well, I guess one lens is better than nothing, especially since it's a lens I want.
Who am I kidding, I want them all.
By spacing them out, maybe they figure we can save up to buy them.

If you go this route, Ricoh could have saved lot of money by not offering the DFA28-105, DFA24-70, DFA70200 etc , they could have told K1 owners to look for FA 28-105 and FA 70-210 on ebay.
Now you got me puzzled. Didn't they produce those lenses to make money?

Im not. This lense means that the 85 is even more delayed. Does not make me happy!
Yes, it is unpleasant surprise to see another DFA lens pushed back another year.
I guess that I can now say: this is how it feels when Ricoh/Pentax does not release what is in much need of an upgrade or replacement and overdue as well (read: a K3II replacement).
We are all in the same boat, waiting and surfing way behind the tide......
