They have to invest first to get a return. Pentax seem to be cost driven rather than revenue driven.

Yes, it is unpleasant surprise to see another DFA lens pushed back another year.
Could be if they are looking for the 85mm to be a reuse from another company.

I'm struggling to see the logic, there, given that they've already shown a design study for the 85. If they had something already or proposed from another maker, I hardly think they'd go to that trouble. Anyway, they've not previously rebadged someone else's design as a * lens (including the DA*16-50 and DA*50-135).

You mean Longyearbyen? Should work for aurora borealis too, but probably better with a wider lens.

My job is to attract new pro users to the Pentax system. Hard enough as it is already. Wont be any easier when I have to say "Sorry, we dont have a 85 1.4, but we can offer a 70-200 F/4"....you can guess the result..

Pro's are only a small percentage of Pentax users. Frankly I think Pentax can forget competing on the professional market against Canon Nikon and Sony. Enthusiasts are the Pentax users, and a lot of them just cannot afford pro grade glass.

Absolutely... outside of the afford pro-grade. Who looks at pro shooters these days for what they use?

Looking at the lens releases, they are targeting enthusiasts as well as 'professionals.' That 70-200 f/4 is an attractive name to arrive on the roadmap imo. Far far far more attractive than 85 f/1.4 .. and I suspect there are many more non-pros in the market for a 70-200 f/4 than pros looking for an 85 f/1.4 in K mount.

So while you, kenspo, might tell your Ricoh bosses the 70-200 f/4 is not what you're expecting (which is fair), I hope they know not everyone thinks that. This lens is a vital piece to the mid range selection and will pair well on both crop and FF bodies.

Now, Release a sharp 17-35mm that accepts 82mm or smaller filters and we have a home run.

Something that makes me wonder is the long delay on the 70-300 cheap zoom. I assumed it was going to be the typical Pentax seal coat job on the current sub par tamron offering or equivalent.
If it’s taking this long it’s either going to be better than that which would be nice or whoever is modifying the lenses for them makes them wait until the big names get served and then bothers to work on Pentax.

I actually need a decent cheap 70-300 far more than I need a fast high end 70-200. I would prefer to get it from Pentax for the weather seals.

I agree. This is a practical zoom. They can make it f/4 as well for weight savings.

I’d love for them to reissue the 3 FA limiteds with updated digital features.
This makes sense on the face of it, but is at substantial risk of villagers (pentaxians) with pitchforks and burning torches if they do anything that slightly depletes the lens' magic. Remember the 15 limited upgrade and it's curved shutter blades ruining the starbursts! An improvement in sharpness or aberrations other characteristic might cause the loss of pixie dust and there would be riots in the streets.

Thank you Ricoh for considering my spending. Postposing the 85/1.4 to 2019 is the best thing they could have done for my budget. Now I don't have to make the choice between the 11-18/2.8 and the 85/1.4. I'll just get the 11-18 this year, and the 85 next year! :-D

Wim
Well I know my budget likes it... As I was interested in both for crop use only of course. Still was hoping to get my hands on both in 2018!

I think those waiting for the FA limiteds to get a refresh need to move on. Their reputation is firmly established, by both their qualities and imperfections. They are finished products from an otherwise extinct line. I think we should all be thankful that they still available new.

The DFA series is all about uncompromising image quality in an era obsessed with sharpness wide open and minimal distortion or aberration. There is enough legacy glass floating around for those of us who like pixie dust.

The roadmap looks fine, although (like all of us) I'd like to see it fulfilled a little quicker.

70-200/4 - I think it will be Tokina AT-X PRO SD 70-200mm F4.0 (IF)

Very good lens, by the way - with the sharpness and IQ of prime.
Tokina 70-200mm Review

There is no sharper telephoto zoom made. You can pay more, but no telephoto zoom is sharper. This Tokina is as sharp as the state-of-the-art Nikon 70-200mm f/4 VR and Nikon 70-200/2.8 VR II, and sharper than Nikon's older teles.

While i think updating the FA limiteds is the lowest priority of the whole FF line, it may also be the easiest of projects to achieve. The success of the limited line and the fact most brands also produce a 1.8 line next to their 1.4, gives me every belief that they will make a set of dfa limiteds at some point. Whether that consist of an upgrade or a complete redesign only time will tell.

I think the most important thing to know is how many copies they built in the most recent batch, started January, 2016. They surely won’t update the designs when there is inventory.

Not if they want to label it with a *
