The 11-18mm is KAF3.

the macro's hood is easily my favorite... i can put it on and take it off, reverse it, etc... without looking at it. i don't usually have a problem with the 300's hood, but about 50% of the time i have to look at it.

I phrased that very poorly. I’m wondering if they’ll do it all at once, like with the HD DA Limiteds, or one at a time.
'*' lenses are a mixed bunch right now. The 16-50 and 50-135 are IMHO going to be re-done to be similar to the new 11-18. But I'm not sure if 'refresh' or 'replaced' is the right word. I always liked the 16-50 but it has some aspects that should be improved, so I'm guessing that will be a completely new lens. The 50-135 gets high praise almost universally so perhaps for that one they keep the optical design just rebuild it in the new "11-18" style with new processes and new coatings and new SDM.

The other '*' lenses are the 60-250, 55mm, 200mm and 300mm. I suspect these when "re-done" will all be FF capable. In fact the 55 may go away, replaced by the new 50mm. The 60-250 is in many ways an extraordinary lens, but it has some glaring flaws as well. It is close to FF with baffle removed or replaced but not good enough to be called FF on a new built lens and the design suffers from focus breathing and painfully slow focus motor. I suspect it will be a low priority for replacement. The 200 definitely needs a new, modern version and the 300 whenever it is refreshed, should get the new coatings and motor.

Ricoh's press release says KAF3

The 60-250 should disappear as well - replaced by a standard 70-200.

I doubt a redesign of the 200/2.8 is feasible. The 70-200/2,8 fills that need.

The zoom is excellent but in now way comparable on dimensions, weight and IMO price to a DFA* 200/2.8.

A redesigned 200/2.8 will be way more expensive than the current old design.

Throw on new coatings and a new drive system onto the 50-135 f/2.8 and that would be like a whole new lens though!
Yes! One of the two things I'm interested in - updated DA* lenses, and Video! At least one might happen now

Just to be clear, the DA* lenses - which asahiman hints might be due for an upgrade announcement in September - are:

DA*55/1.4
DA*200/2.8
DA*300/4

DA*11~18/2.8 (new lens scheduled for summer release)
DA*16~50/2.8
DA*50~135/2.8
DA*60~250/4 (can be physically altered to cover the FF image circle)

The telephoto lenses were FF designs and are certified by Pentax to be FF compatible. They probably needn’t be fully redesigned, but could get new motors. Given the D FA*50/1.4, one questions the need to invest in the DA*55.

But the 16~50 and 50~135 would be logical lenses to redesign and announce or release with a replacement APSc flagship. Pentax would then have (including the 11~18) a Holy Trinity of ‘*’ APSc ZOOMS, plus potentially the 60~250/4.

There was a 200mm f/2.8 patent, a while ago. I see that lens' replacement as having new optics.
If they decided to replace these lenses instead of ordering new batches of SDM micromotors, that's really good news.

I fear you are correct but wish it were different. The 60-250 is in many ways an ideal lens for me. I'm finding it is just as useful on the K-1 as it was on APS-C. Though a 100-300 f/4 '*' would be interesting................

I'm quite sure I'm correct - it makes no sense to release a 60-250 f/4 and a 70-200 f/4. As for why, there can be a number of reasons - image quality (over the entire FF area), size&weight (the 60-250 is already heavier than 70-200mm f/4s from other brands), price (must be significantly less expensive than the f/2.8).
It should work great on FF; and maybe they'll solve the focus breathing issue, too. It's not all bad

The road-mapped 70-200/4 is listed as a D-FA lens, not D-FA* (although that is subject to change), which would not be a satisfying replacement. As a D-FA* lens I would expect it to be bigger, heavier and more expensive than the SMC DA* 60-250/4. An HD DA* 60-250/4 would likely not change size or weight (maybe a little if they changed focus motor and gear train), and only modestly increase in price. I could see a D-FA 70-200/4 co-existing with either an SDM or revised HD 60-250 if they positioned it as a consumer-grade lens, maybe as good or even better than the 60-250 in the FF corners, worse in the center, and priced below it (or well below it if it can’t match the 60-250 in the FF corners).

I’d also be a bit disappointed if they discontinued the 60-250, even though I’ve got one — it makes the Pentax line-up unique.

They announced a 70-200 f/4, which is pretty close in terms of focal length, and shouldn't be bigger or heavier either. I guess there's not need for a 60-250 f/4 then.
