As MikeyBugs95 says, SR is optimized for handheld shooting. When my camera is on a tripod, the SR is off, the self-timer is on, and the mirror lockup is on. This setup works well for my lunar shots (even if the 55-300 zoom isn't the sharpest performer at maximum magnification).

I do wish that you could input the focal length manually into SR as an override. That would solve the 3rd party converter issue but Pentax is not going to support a 3rd party TC specially considering ones that haven't been released in ages.

You can't? If I put a manual lens (K, M or A) on my K-5IIs, the camera prompts me to dial in the focal length. The same if I mount a TC.

I think the issue is with some of the more modern AF TC's, some kindly pass through the lens info for your exif... but don't multiply the value for your SR to work with. I don't have a list of which ones do what, but that is my understanding of the situation.

That only works when its a manual lens, it doesn't work with AF lenses. We are basically stuck until a FF TC comes out that accurately reports the 1.5x focal length on say the DA 300mm or if i had money, the 150-450mm.

I see. Now, that's a disadvantage.

That would explain why my old manual focus glass produces the prompt; I got it with my Pentax-M SMC 50mm f/1.4 this past Saturday.

Indeed. The DA converter 1.4x does the math but... It's a DA and doesnt cover FF as you probably all know.

Even if you can't, I'm afraid you'll have to...

I bought a Soligor 2x teleconverter when I was a teenager. It’s the most useless piece of photography equipment I own, and it has made me a life time sceptic of teleconverters.

Some of the thinner ones make dandy extension tubes after you knock the coke bottle bottom glass out of the middle.

I had a Kiron teleconverter back in the 1980s that I paired with my Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f/2.8-4. It worked OK, but I didn't use that combination much because what teleconverters magnify best is camera shake.

I did try that pair a few years back with my K-5 to photograph the moon. Forget chromatic aberration manifesting as purple or green fringing--this was bright blue! I've been avoiding using teleconverters with high-contrast subjects ever since.

LOL! But I have a nice old set of Vivitar extension tubes which work well with old lenses (It has been a while since I used them myself, but my son have used them with his M-50mm/4 macro to get some creepy spider baby shots!)
