With the current focus on surpassing previous resolution expectations "lenses for modern sensors" , I would be expect the new TC to be both more money than the 1.4 and better IQ. I expect a modern TC for modern sensors at a modern price. If they can produce a 2x with say 5% resolution loss, I'd be happy to pay up to $800 for it. It would turn my Tamron 300 2.8 into a 600 ƒ5.6 and as far as I'm concerned, IQ is the only thing I want them to get right. If the IQ isn't right, people will just use whatever old cheaper TC they can get their hands on.
As for the time limit... why do people put themselves through this? In 10 years from now will I care if it's one year, two, or three?
Right now I can use the 300 and 1.7 to get to 510 ƒ4.5... there's nothing particularly important about that extra 90mm.
My guess, if it isn't worth it for you to own the 1.7 and/or 1.4, it definitely won't be worth it for you to buy the new TC, whatever it's designation. New better things always cost more money.
