I hope it will be something like F1,7X.
A 1.4X is a bit small in my opinion, think croping. DA300/4 X 1,4 = 420/5,6, DA300/4 X 1,7 = 510/6,7.
Without mechanical auto focus from the camera and with AF switch for AF in the converter or lens.
Hopefully 2020 and not later.

For modern lenses with fast AF like the D FA* 50mm this isn't a good idea. Also 1.7x decrease the speed of a lens more than 1.4x.

Why?

Also 1.7x decrease the speed of a lens more than 1.4x.
Not sure if you mean AF or/and f stops.
Of course it gets a litle bit worse with a converter, but with 1.4X you get close to crop an image instead.
But an AF switch is probably unnecessary, it should work automatically.

1.4x seems to do its job with a reasonably small hit to quality.

I've used a couple of 2x and honestly, I was better off cropping.

I plan to go there then too. I'm sort of addicted to the place.

Since the work has already been done for the teleconverter for the APSC lenses, I imagine the biggest challenge will be in the glass. The electronics in the present one should port over seamlessly with few modifications.

1.4x yes... but they won't release a 2x converter. There's just too much impact on IQ...

They made it in film era. Canon and Sony produce 1.4x and 2x, Nikon produces 1.4x, 1.7x and 2x. The users are happy.

35mm film photography didn't involve pixel peeping 36MP resolution images.

I just don't believe Ricoh will produce a modern 2x converter (it never has for APS-C). 1.4x, yes... 1.7x, maybe. But 2x? I'd be thoroughly amazed.

Take a look at Kurt Munger's review of the Sony 1.4x and 2x TCs and you'll see why. The 1.4x generally produces better sharpness and detail than upscaling of non-TC images. Upscale those 1.4x images, and they're actually better than those taken with the 2x. As such, the 1.4x TC is the one to go for and there's little benefit to owning the 2x... or as Kurt puts it, "it really looks like you'd be just as well off by leaving the 2.0X in the bag".

The 1.4x RC might work with my D FA 150-450. It would work with the D FA 70-200 f/4, if I ever decide on a lighter (and shorter) alternative.

Waiting for one here. Hopefully not two years out. How hard can it be?
With the current focus on surpassing previous resolution expectations "lenses for modern sensors" , I would be expect the new TC to be both more money than the 1.4 and better IQ. I expect a modern TC for modern sensors at a modern price. If they can produce a 2x with say 5% resolution loss, I'd be happy to pay up to $800 for it. It would turn my Tamron 300 2.8 into a 600 ƒ5.6 and as far as I'm concerned, IQ is the only thing I want them to get right. If the IQ isn't right, people will just use whatever old cheaper TC they can get their hands on.

As for the time limit... why do people put themselves through this? In 10 years from now will I care if it's one year, two, or three?

Right now I can use the 300 and 1.7 to get to 510 ƒ4.5... there's nothing particularly important about that extra 90mm.
My guess, if it isn't worth it for you to own the 1.7 and/or 1.4, it definitely won't be worth it for you to buy the new TC, whatever it's designation. New better things always cost more money.

Well, my current Tamron 1.4x TC is starting to get a bit hazy. So I am going to need another one and I am hoping that Pentax comes out with one before I have to retire the Tamron. If I have my usual luck, the Tamron will get retired. I will buy another used one somewhere the week before Pentax announces that theirs is available for sale.
